2018 Yamaha YZF-R3 India Launch Likely At Auto Expo

2018 Yamaha YZF-R3 may get new colour schemes and BSIV compliance but mechanically it will remain the same

Yamaha introduced 2018 updates for the highly popular YZF-R3 back in November. The sportsbike has received three new colour schemes that are Raven, Team Yamaha Blue and Vivid White. It continues to be produced at Yamaha’s Jakarta production facility in Indonesia and is shipped to several global markets from there.

The Japanese two-wheeler manufacturer had already announced that it would start selling the bike in the US market from February this year. It is expected to be showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo next month before eventually going on sale or it could be launched there with the price announcement reportedly. However, details for the Indian market are yet to be officially disclosed by the brand.

Speaking about the changes, only the above mentioned three new colour options have been added to the bike. In terms of design, it appears identical to the outgoing model. On the mechanical front too, the motorcycle remains unchanged.

The Yamaha YZF-R3 competes with tough rivals like Kawasaki Ninja 300, KTM RC 390, TVS Apache RR 310 and Benelli 302R. It has already garnered pretty good response with its performance in India as well as in global markets. Yamaha is certainly aiming to enhance the popularity of the bike further with the new model.

On the powertrain front, 2018 Yamaha YZF-R3 will continue drawing energy from 321 cc liquid-cooled, in-line, twin-cylinder engine that is coupled with a 6-speed gearbox. This engine is capable of churning out 41 bhp of peak power at 10,750 rpm and 29.6 Nm of peak torque at 9,000 rpm. Expect the braking and suspension equipments to be same as well.

Yamaha YZF-R3 is available in both ABS and non-ABS versions globally. Stopping power comes from a 298 mm front disc brake and a 220 mm rear disc brake. For suspension duty, it relies on 41 mm Kayaba front forks and a rear monoshock absorber. It is expected to cost around Rs. 3.5 lakh (ex-showroom).

The YZF-R3 was discontinued it India following the stricter emission standards were put in place. It will now comply with BS-IV regulations and is expected to be offered with ABS at least as an option. The major attraction in Yamaha’s show floor will likely be the new generation YZF-R15 at the Auto Expo. It comes with mechanical as well as several visual modifications to enthrall the enthusiasts.
