In the last two fiscals, only eight units of the Yamaha MT-09 have been sold

Yamaha Motor India had launched its MT-09 tracer at the 2016 Auto Expo and surprised a lot of us while breaking a lot of hearts. The bike is now going through some really disappointing sales figures, which shows that the company’s decision to bring this bike to our shores has completely backfired. To be precise, only eight units of the Yamaha MT-09 have been sold in the last two fiscals.

The Yamaha MT-09 belongs to the tracer category of motorcycles that come across as slim and lightweight. In a country like ours, where spending money on big bikes means expecting bigger looks for most of the buyers. In such a scenario, the Yamaha MT-09 didn’t manage to appeal the youth and hence is enduring a painful death in the Indian two-wheeler market.

Regarding the failure of Yamaha MT-09 in India, Mr Roy Kurian, Senior Vice President, Yamaha Motor India has stated that the potential buyers of the MT-09 did not understand the motorcycle. He further added that in this price, people expect some big and bulky looking 800cc to 1000cc bikes and hence, the MT-09 being an agile and lean motorcycle, failed to catch the attention. The top honcho further went on to say that it is only after riding a few kilometres that one can understand the might of the MT-09.

The Yamaha MT-09 is currently available at the company’s dealerships across India at a price of Rs 11.36 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). At such a price, the motorcycle even fails in front of fierce rivalry from the Kawasaki Z900, which is more aggressive and tech brimmed than the former. It is due to such a mix of reasons that the Yamaha MT-09 is indeed on the verge of extinction from the company’s product portfolio in India and is likely to be discontinued in the coming months.
