In June 2019, over 10,000 units of New Maruti Wagon R sold, which means the latest-gen tallboy has successfully filled into the shoes of the previous version

The 3rd generation Wagon R for the Indian market launched in January 2019 and has been very quick with garnering a great response from the small car buyers. The 2019 Maruti Wagon R found 10,228 buyers last month, which means it has successfully filled into the shoes of the previous version. Let’s try to figure out what makes the latest Wagon R so popular –

1. Bold Design

The 2019 Maruti Wagon R seems to have an evolved design that retains the tallboy structure of all the previous versions but still manages to look bold and modern. The India-spec Wagon R even looks a fair bit like the JDM sibling but the company has ensured it doesn’t have the totally boxy look that the Indian audience might not prefer.

The 2019 Wagon R has even grown in size and the larger dimensions help it have a higher road presence. The front-end of the vehicle has dual-split headlamps that make it look chunky and cheerful, while the side profile looks trendy with the floating-type roof. The vertically stacked tail lamps and chrome registration plate garnish helps it look quite bold.

2. 1.2-litre engine from Swift

For the first time ever, the 2019 Maruti Wagon R comes with two petrol engine options – 1.0-litre K10B three-cylinder engine and 1.2-litre K12B four-cylinder engine. Both the engines are available with both 5-speed manual and 5-speed AMT.

Thanks to the availability of two engine options, buyers can now choose to purchase a more powerful tallboy that is even frugal enough. It may be noted here that both the engine options are highly fuel efficient, which means one can opt for a more powerful motor without compromising on the fuel economy.

3. CNG option

Like the previous version, the New Maruti Wagon R is available with a CNG-powered version, which should please everyone looking for really low running costs. The CNG version of the latest Wagon R is only available with the 1.0-litre petrol engine variant, which has helped the company keep the costs competitive. While there were also reports of the company readying an LPG version, there’s no official confirmation of the same.

4. 1.0L and AGS retained

Another factor working in favour of the 2019 Maruti Wagon R is the fact that it continues to be available with a 1.0-litre petrol engine mated to the 5-speed AMT (AGS). In fact, both the engine options are available with both 5-speed manual and 5-speed AMT options. The smaller of the two motors offers a maximum power of 67.98 PS along with a peak torque of 90 Nm. The availability of the AMT on the smaller motor means one can benefit from a mixture of competitive pricing, low running costs and the convenience of an automatic transmission.

5. Lightweight HEARTECT platform

The 2019 Maruti Wagon R is underpinned by the fifth-gen lightweight HEARTECT platform. This is the same modern architecture that is used in more expensive models like the Swift, Dzire, Baleno, Ignis and Ertiga. The lightweight platform not only leads to a low kerb weight but even provides improved dynamics. What’s even better is that in spite of the usage of the modern underpinnings, the company hasn’t hiked the prices by a great margin.

6. Touchscreen infotainment unit

The 2019 Maruti Wagon R marks the debut of the SmartPlay Studio touchscreen infotainment unit. The touch-sensitive system offers both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support and even has a user-friendly interface.

7. Safer

The 2019 Maruti Wagon R is a lot safer than the previous version. Firstly, the HEARTECT platform offers great dynamics and higher crash safety. Plus, the new model comes equipped with a lot more standard safety features, which include dual front airbag, ABS, ISOFIX child seat restraints, high-speed warning alert, and front seatbelt reminder.
