Polestar 2 EV uses a 78 kWh battery pack with a claimed driving range of 500 km on a single charge; production to begin in early 2020
Exactly a year after hosting European debut of the 1 at the Geneva Motor Show, Polestar, the standalone electric performance brand of Volvo, will globally premiere the 2 at this year’s event in Switzerland. In the run up to the public reveal in less than a week, official images and details of the Polestar 2 have been released on the internet.
While the Polestar 1 is a two-door 2+2 electric performance hybrid GT with 600 horsepower and 1000 Nm, the 2, on the other hand, is a fastback capable of rivalling the Tesla Model 3 and perhaps its closest rival yet. It comes equipped with two electric motors producing 402 hp and 660 Nm combined power and torque outputs.
The high capacity 78 kWh battery pack helps in attaining 500 km range on WLTP cycle on a single charge. Polestar will first offer the special Launch edition of the 2 in its first year of production costing 59,900 euros. However, the company targets a start price of around 40,000 euros in Germany for the regular model.
Built on the modular CMA architecture as the XC40, the Polestar 2 has the battery pack mounted on the floor for optimal centre of gravity and weight distribution along with increase in chassis rigidity. It is one of the first production models ever to feature an Android infotainment system operable through 11-inch touchscreen.
Polestar pitches the 2 as its first volume based electric vehicle and the one that is most promising yet as a slew of new products are planned for the near future. It gets pixel LED headlamps, proximity lighting technology, frameless side mirrors, etc. It can be ordered online and buyers can actually purchase it as the unique subscription programme will only be introduced later.
Production of the Polestar 2 will begin in China from early next year and the international markets targetted are Belgium, China, Canada, Germany, Norway, Netherlands, Sweden, United Kingdom and United States. Customers wanting to exploit more performance from the Polestar 2 can opt for an optional pack with Ohlins dampers, 20-inch forged wheels, gold seat belts and brake calipers as well as Brembo brakes.
