Volvo’s First Plug-In Hybrid Model To Be Assembled In India By 2019

Volvo XC90 Plug-In Hybrid model will be assembled in India next year and the Swedish maker won’t invest in diesel engines as future will be hybrid or electric

Volvo officially announced during the launch of XC40 that the company is planning to assemble plug-in hybrid model next year in India. The Swedish maker specified that it will be XC90 Plug-in Hybrid, which made its India debut couple of years ago. Volvo has also confirmed that they won’t invest in diesel engine and future is going to be hybrid or electric.

Volvo S60 sedan, which made its global debut last month, is powered by petrol and hybrid engines only as it is the first model to ditch diesel engines completely in the lineup. The company is so confident that they are planning to stop production of internal combustion engines from next year onwards.

All engines from next year onwards will have electrification. Volvo is one of the luxury manufacturers which brings new models to India soon after global launch, as the company is importing these models and they plan to begin assembly of them soon in India. Currently, the company assembles XC90 and S90 models in India and it will be followed by XC60 and recently launched XC40.

Volvo XC60 is the most popular model of the company in India and accounts for more than 25 percent of sales. They are planning to sell 3,000 models this year and by 2020 and wanting to sell 5,000 cars annually. The long term goal of Volvo in India is to sell 10,000 units annually, which is currently achieved by some of its competitors.

The Swedish maker sells plug-in hybrid XC90 in India and is priced on expensive side by being CBU models. The XC90 Plug-in Hybrid model is powered by 2.0 L turbocharged and supercharged engine along with electric motors, the combined out is 407 bhp of power and 400 Nm of torque. The power is sent to all four wheels via 8 speed automatic gearbox.

Initially, the company might assemble Inscription model even though it misses out some features from more expensive Excellence trim, it could help Volvo to price plug-in hybrid model competitively. Currently, the XC90 Plug-in Hybrid Inscription model is priced at Rs. 96.65 lakh and Excellence model at Rs. 1.31 crore (Both prices, Ex-Showroom).
