Volvo S90 and V90 with 600HP Polestar models are speculated to be in the pipeline as an uprated version of the T8 plug-in hybrid powertrain
A report emerged on Motortrend has said that the S90 sedan and V90 wagon encompassing the Swedish luxury automaker’s latest design language will receive the Polestar treatment. The speculation cropped ever since both those models were unveiled to general public for the very first time.
Perhaps, the biggest issue will be how the performance-obsessed variants will behave as they are the flagship models in their respective ranges. Volvo’s Research and Development chief, Peter Mertens, has conceded to the American website that there will surely be Polestar based variants in the S90 and V90.
What will come as a surprise is the power delivery they are expected to make. The Polestar S90 and V90 will come equipped with a hybrid powertrain that could punch out up to 600 horses. The Volvo chief further stated the versatile 2.0-litre four-cylinder internal combustion motor can be tuned to 450 hp with the use of supercharger and electrically-augmented dual turbochargers.
In the T8 plug-in hybrid versions of the S90 and V90, the electric motor currently producing 87 hp sends power to the rear wheels will be ditched in favour of a more powerful system. On paper it means, the Polestar variants are capable of delivering 200 hp over the T8 Twin engine spec versions of both the models.
With these power figures, the Polestar S90 and V90 will compete against sports sedans and wagons in its class which include the BMW M division cars such as the upcoming F90 BMW M5 and Mercedes-Benz AMG performance boosted models like the W213 Mercedes-AMG E 63. Other rivals could be Audi RS6 Performance and Jaguar XFR-S.
In our exclusive chat with Managing Director at Volvo Auto India Private Ltd, Tom von Bonsdorff, we revealed in February the launch time of the all-new S90 sedan is scheduled during the third quarter of 2016.
