The company’s engine plant in Skövde has switched to renewable heating from January 1, 2018 as part of reducing overall carbon footprint

The Swedish luxury carmaker Volvo’s engine factory in Skövde in its home country has become the first climate-neutral manufacturing facility. Having switched to renewable heating from the beginning of this year, it has achieved this unique feat within the company. Skövde is the first facility in Volvo Cars’ global manufacturing chain to inherit this status and it marks an important drive towards the brand’s vision of having climate-neutral global manufacturing operations by the middle of next decade.

Skövde has also become one of only a few climate-neutral automotive plants in the entire European continent. Volvo says improving energy efficiency is its first priority and for the energy it needs to use, aiming for supplies generated from renewable sources are key. Javier Varela, Senior Vice President of Manufacturing and Logistics at Volvo Cars has said that the Skövde plant achievement is a significant addition to the company’s broader efforts in minimising environmental footprint.

Volvo thrives to be the leader within the automotive industry in the movement towards climate-neutral manufacturing. Largely regarded as a safety pioneer, Volvo has partnered with a local provider and signed a new agreement to ensure all heating supplied to the Skövde factory is generated from waste incineration, biomass and recycled bio-fuels.

As has been the case with Volvo’s other European production units, the electricity supply for the entire Skövde facility comes from renewable sources since 2008. Volvo has planned to introduce electrified powertrain to all of its new vehicles starting from next year.
