Volkswagen Polo GTI 3-Door unveiled at 2016 Delhi Auto Expo, launch in September this year

The high-performance Volkswagen Polo GTI hot hatchback has been launched at the Auto Expo 2016 in Greater Noida after the company revelled on the successful sales of the entry-level performance-oriented GT model. Spied running trials in India more often in the last twelve months, the iconic GTI badged Polo hatchback will be powered by a 1.8-litre potent TSI petrol unit.

The powerful Polo hatchback will spawn a new segment in the domestic market as currently, the hot-hatch space is run by the Volkswagen Polo GT TSI and Fiat Abarth Punto based on the Punto Evo.

The tuned-up 1.4-litre T-jet turbocharged petrol variant in the Abarth Punto churns out a massive 140 bhp maximum power and 200 Nm of peak torque coupled with a five-speed manual gearbox. The 1.2-litre TSI petrol motor makes out 103 bhp and 175 Nm of peak torque on the Polo GT paired with a seven-speed DSG gearbox driving the front wheels.The 1.0-litre Boosterjet engined Baleno is more likely to join the tussle in the coming months.

The Polo GTI hot hatchback could make grace the showrooms as soon as next month. It’s said to be offered as the top-of-the-range Polo variant and will consist of thoroughly distinguished exterior styling besides having a sporty interior.

It will become our domestic market’s most powerful hatchback ever at launch. The Volkswagen Polo GTI derives power from a 1.8-litre four-cylinder TSI turbo-petrol mill from the EA888 family and produce a staggering 187 bhp of maximum power output and 250 Nm of peak torque for a punchier ride. The Polo GTI can sprint from standstill to 100 kmph in just 6.7 seconds and can reach a top speed of 250 kmph.

In foreign markets two drivetrains are available for the Polo GTI with a six-speed manual and a seven-speed DSG automatic transmission. The possibilities of the seven-speed DSG transmission have come true paired with a 1.8-litre TSI turbocharged petrol engine at the Expo unveil. Depending on the localisation of parts, it could be priced between Rs. 16 lakh and Rs. 20 lakh.

The cosmetic changes adorning the Polo GTI are a honeycomb grille wearing GTI badge, remodded bumper with larger air damps, LED headlamps and LED Daytime Running Lights, red brake calipers, body kits, rear sporty diffuser and a larger spoiler, dual exhausts and red painted tail lights, etc. On the inside, a three-spoke flat bottom sporty steering wheel, red stitches on the dashboard and aluminium pedals have been made available.
