Volkswagen Group to discontinue over 40 models; will invest more on electric cars

Volkswagen AG, being one of the largest automaker in the world builds nearly 50 different models globally for different markets under the badge of different brands like Audi, Porsche, Skoda etc. No wonder, after being hit by the ‘Dieselgate’ scam the German automobile group’s business has seen a decline dramatically, and besides that the brand value of Volkswagen and its associates have dropped rapidly.

Now to salvage the brands the Volkswagen AG has decided to discontinue more than 40 models globally, which will give the automobile group a chance to invest a huge amount of money on fully electric vehicles. Volkswagen and its associates like Audi, Porsche, Seat and Skoda together will now reduce the number of the models globally, after phasing out the present model lineup although.

The Volkswagen AG is planning to make a great leap in electric mobility, handling and automated driving technology by the end of 2025, and therefore become the world leader in green transport technology.

Alongside this the automaker group plans to sell around 3 million cars worldwide by the end of 2025, and in next decade the Volkswagen AG will introduce around 30 new fully electric models globally. Presently the group consists of 12 automotive brands which include Audi, Lamborghini, Seat, Porsche, Ducati, Skoda, MAN trucks etc.

Although the final number of models for discontinuation is not confirmed yet, neither the particular models which are to be dropped; but discontinuing such a large number of models around the world will cut the development and production cost for the group, which will also help it to overcome the burden of the huge fine amount charged on it after the emission cheating scandal, which amounts around $18.3 billion.
