Volkswagen is gearing up to launch an electric vehicle offensive in the global market. The German automaker is readying four electric vehicles that will launch by 2020. These include two SUVs, a sedan and the I.D. hatchback. All these vehicles will play crucial role in the brand’s EV strategy.

The I.D. hatchback has been one of the most awaited electric vehicles from the brand. Apart from that, there will be a SUV and the I.D. Crozz coupe SUV as well. So far, it is clear that Volkswagen is preparing to enter various segments with its zero emission all-electric products. The first SUV will come drawing inspiration for T-Roc concept and Tiguan.

The electric SUV and the coupe SUV will come with a rear-wheel drive layout, just like the I.D. electric hatchback. Both the SUVs will get twin motor setup carrying a larger electric motor fitted to the rear axle and a smaller one will be there generating power for the front axle. While Volkswagen is yet to reveal the specifications of these upcoming electric vehicles, they are expected to come kicking out total power output of around 300 bhp.

The Volkswagen I.D electric hatchback would come capable of running around 483 kilometre on a single charge. Expect the two SUVs to arrive with around 500 km running range. After these four zero emission models Volkswagen will introduce the I.D. Buzz microbus in 2022, which will revive the iconic vehicle in a completely new guise with an environment friendly powertrain.

Volkswagen has been focusing on electric powertrain development for quite some time. Apart from focusing to grab a large share in the emerging global electric vehicle market, these zero emission cars will also play crucial role in salvaging the company’s brand image that it lost due to the Dieselgate scam.

As we have already reported, Volkswagen has taken a multi-stage strategy for launching electric vehicles and introducing these models is the initial part of that plan. Under this strategy, the German brand aims to roll out around 25 electric cars by the end of next decade. Alongside launching these vehicles, Volkswagen is also mulling the possibility to make and sell electric powertrains for other automakers.
