Volkswagen Ameo spotted undisguised for the first time ahead of Auto Expo 2016 launch

The first undisguised image of the ‘made for India’ compact sedan from Volkwagen, the Ameo, has surfaced on the internet. The Indian Compact Sedan VW christened it as before confirming the ‘Ameo’ name will go up against big rivals on one of most the fiercely contested segments in the market such as the top-selling Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire, Honda Amaze, Ford Figo Aspire, Hyundai Xcent and Tata Zest.

Like its sub-four metre counterparts, the Volkswagen Ameo has a stubby boot almost mandatory to its compact sedan segment as revealed by the spotted picture. To be positioned between the Polo premium hatchback and Vento sedan, the spied image in what seems to be at a stockyard highlights the TDI badge, which in turn suggests the diesel engine equipped model. Looking at the side view, there are little or no changes have been made as the clean profile resembles largely to that of the Vento.

The Volkswagen Ameo is rumoured to have revised bumper to firmly distinguish from its Polo and Vento siblings but rest of the front fascia will be majorly identical. It could be featured with LED Daytime Running Lights in a similar fashion to the facelifted Vento and if offered it will only be the second sedan in its class following Tata Zest to have such visual embellishment.

Coming to the inside, the Ameo has front centre armrest, Air Conditioning vents for rear passengers, a touchscreen infotainment system with MirrorLink, rear passenger handle to push co-driver seat for additional space, Outside Rear View Mirrors with turn indicators, auto-dimming IRVM, roof antenna and probably class-leading boot space. As similar to the Polo hatchback, the Ameo will have dual-tone black and beige interior colour schemes with silver touches on the centre console. Part sharing doesn’t end there as height adjustable driver seat, 15-inch alloy wheels, chilled glovebox, reversing camera and rear parking sensor and many other functions are expected to be carried over.

The engine options will remain the same as that of Polo with the 1.2-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel units on offer. The three-pot naturally aspirated petrol mill is tuned to produce 74 bhp at 5,400 rpm and 110 Nm of peak torque at 3,750 rpm whist the TDI diesel is good enough to generate 89 bhp at 4,200 rpm and 230 Nm of peak torque at 15,00 rpm. Both engines will be coupled with a five-speed manual gearbox driving the front wheels and a beefier 1.2-litre TSI unit with seven-speed DSG gearbox can be expected to rival Ford Figo Aspire automatic.
