Volkswagen India Private Limited has introduced a new 1.0-litre petrol engine to the Ameo subcompact sedan’s lineup in the domestic market after finding its way into the Polo premium hatchback last month.
The outgoing 1.2-litre MPI petrol was good enough to develop 74 bhp at 5,400 rpm and 110 Nm of peak torque delivered at 3,750 rpm. It was made available with five-speed manual gearbox driving the front wheels.

The new 999 cc MPI unit is in response to the changing customer preference for more fuel efficient cars from Volkswagen. The gasoline mill generates a peak power of 75 bhp at 6,200 rpm and 95 Nm of torque delivered between 3,000 rpm and 4,300 rpm.
It is said to be BS-IV emission compliant as well and will return increased fuel efficiency. It is connected to the same five-speed manual transmission as Volkswagen does not offer automatic variants with the petrol engine option.
In a similar fashion to the Polo Pace, the Ameo Pace gets all the features from the Comfortline grade such as blacked out wing mirrors, new sporty alloy wheels, cruise control and faux carbon fibre spoiler among others. The new petrol 1.0 Ameo Pace is priced at Rs. 6.10 lakh (ex-showroom).
The Ameo is also made available in 1.5-litre TDI diesel mill which generates 109 bhp at 4,000 rpm and 250 Nm at 1,500 rpm. It is either mated to a five-speed manual or a seven-speed DSG automatic transmission. The VW sedan competes against the likes of Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Honda Amaze, Ford Aspire and Hyundai Xcent.
The India-specific sedan is retailed in five colour palettes such as Reflex Silver, Toffee Brown, Candy White, Carbon Steel and Blue Silk. Trendline, Comfortline, Comfortline Plus, Highline and Highline Plus are the different variants Volkswagen offer the Ameo with.
