Vespa and Aprilia Scooters Sales Grew Massively in Q1 FY18

Piaggio group owned Vespa and Aprilia premium scooters have registered 90.97% sales growth in first quarter of FY18

Piaggio Group owned premium scooter makers Vespa and Aprilia have registered a very impressive sales growth of 90.97% in the first quarter of current financial year compared to the same period in last fiscal. Together, the two Italian brands have sold 2,782 units of premium scooters in the 150 cc scooter segment in India in June this year. Also, the 150 cc scooters from Piaggio group accounted for around 60% of its total sales.

The two brands sell models like the Vespa 125 cc series, Vespa 150 and the Aprilia SR 150. In between April and June this year, Aprilia and Vespa sold a total of 13,572 units of scooters in the domestic market. In the corresponding period last year, the number of sales from two brands was 7,107 units, which marks a significant growth.

The 125 c Vespa range has sold 5,279 units in the first quarter of current fiscal, while the 150 cc models from Vespa and Aprilia sold 8,293 units. Last month only, Piaggio group registered 2,782 units of 150 cc premium scooters compared to 705 units in June last year. The 125 cc scooters also recorded 1,733 units of sales compared to 1,622 units in same month last year.

Now, with the demands increasing for the premium scooters across the country, Piaggio hopes the number to be increased further. Interestingly, Vespa 150 and the Aprilia SR 150 are the only four-stroke 150 cc scooters available in the country. While the Vespa models come with suave styling and premium appeal, the Aprilia SR 150 wears a sporty bike like appearance.

The Aprilia SR 150 comes as India’s first sports scooter and it shares the same powertrain with the Vespa 150 models. As we reported in May this year, Aprilia is already in process to launch the SR 125 that will be the 125 cc version of its bigger sibling. This scooter will share the same powertrain as the Vespa 125. Expect it to be launched very soon.
