UV sales in India last month demonstrated how big the segment is growing as Vitara Brezza, Creta and Innova Crysta take centre stage
The Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza was the leading model in the whole of utility segment at the end of last month by recording 9,554 units of sales. But the biggest achievement emphasising the growth of that particular space was that in total over 75,000 examples were delivered in August 2016. With a cumulative figure of 76,958 units, the Indian auto industry saw Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Toyota and Mahindra and Mahindra taking the most benefits.
Besides the Vitara Brezza subcompact SUV, the largest car maker in the country has large number of products such as the entry-level Omni, Gypsy and Eeco with Ertiga MPV and S-Cross premium crossover. Toyota Kirloskar Motor’s Innova Crysta is another top-seller in the category and the Japanese brand also has the Fortuner premium off-roader at its disposal.

With 8,450 units sold, it is interesting to note that Hyundai’s compact SUV, the Creta, is constantly up there in the top three but apart from that you cannot see a Hyundai vehicle in the entire list. This could be the reason why the Koreans are pitching the upcoming Tucson in the middle of the Creta and Santa Fe to strengthen its SUV portfolio.
Much like Toyota, Ford also has two strong contenders in the utilitarian space: One is the EcoSport and the other is the Endeavour which substantially bettered arch rival Fortuner since the new generation was launched in the beginning of this year. Present heavily in the UV segment is the vehicles from Mahindra as Bolero led the way from Scorpio, KUV100 and TUV300.
The home-grown manufacturer took advantage of the first to explore micro-SUV segment with KUV100 which is predicted to face healthy competition in the near future. However, the recently launched Nuvosport failed to garner much response among the Indian buyers.
