Mahindra Y400 is based on the new generation of SsangYong Rexton and the company has made minor cosmetic changes to make it in line with other products

Mahindra is going to introduce Y400 flagship SUV in India on November 19 as the company earlier confirmed that they will introduce three models in the second half of 2018 to improve sales, and the first model among the three was Marazzo MPV, which was launched in September, second model is Ssangyong Rexton based Mahindra Y400 which is likely to be badged as Mahindra Inferno and the third model will be S201 compact SUV. S201 launch likely in February 2019.

Here are the top 10 things you should know about the Y400.

1. Based On SsangYong Rexton

The Y400 is basically the new generation of SsangYong Rexton, which made its debut last year and it is already on sale in many global markets. The concept model based on new Rexton was first showcased in India at the 2018 Auto Expo and the test mule has been spotted ‘n’ number of times across the country. But Mahindra has made some design tweaks to make it inline with other models in the portfolio.

2. Design

Mahindra Y400 gets new chrome finished bold grille upfront with projector headlamps and integrated LED DRLs. The bumper also comes with a new design theme and the company has also given black plastic cladding running across the body for SUV look.

The rear also gets LED DRLs along with new bumper compared to International model. The Y400 is expected to come with 17 or 18-inch alloy wheels and the window get chrome lining for a premium feel.

3. Interior

The interior design of Y400 is completely different from any other Mahindra models as the quality of materials is really good. The dashboard has three different layers in which the top portion is finished in black colour, wood finish in the middle and the lower portion get same leather upholstery as seats and door pad. The three spoke multi-function steering wheel is also new and digital instrument cluster with lots of customizing options is also part of the package.

4. Seven Seater

The SUV measures 4,850 mm in length, 1,920 mm in width and height is 1,800 mm. The wheelbase of Y400 is 2,865 mm, which is longer than Toyota Fortuner. The upcoming Y400 is a proper seven-seater SUV in which all three rows offer a good amount of space for passengers and the company has given AC vents for both second and third row along with USB charging points and cup holders.

5. Feature Loaded

Mahindra has given lots of features on Y400, which includes 9.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple Carplay and Android Auto, dual zone climate control, sunroof, leather seats, cruise control, digital instrument cluster, reverse camera with parking sensors, automatic projector headlamps, alloy wheels, ambient lighting, rain sensing wipers and more.

6. Safety Features

The Y400 is loaded with lots of safety features like 7-airbags, ABS, EBD, Electronic Stability Programme, Hill Descent Control, Emergency Braking System and Active Roll Over Protection. We can also expect the company to introduce some advanced radar-based safety features also.

7. Engine

The 2.2 L diesel engine produces 187 bhp of power and 420 Nm of torque. The seven-speed automatic transmission is sourced from Mercedes Benz. The company will offer both two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive models. Later, Mahindra is also expected to introduce 2.0 L petrol engine with 225 hp and 220 Nm.

8. Mahindra’s second monocoque model

The Y400 will become the second monocoque model from Mahindra as all other models are except XUV 500 are based on a body of frame chassis even the recently launched Marazzo also. The monocoque chassis will help the SUV to improve its road dynamics and gives a car like a feel. We can expect good ride quality also and the upcoming compact SUV is also based on monocoque chassis.

9. Production Commenced

Mahindra commenced production of Y400 last month and we have already spotted the model at the plant, which is waiting to be dispatched to dealerships across the country. The CKD kits for Y400 started arriving in September and the first batch is expected to reach dealerships by the middle of this month while deliveries will begins soon after the launch.

10. Price and Competitors

Mahindra Y400 is going to compete in the premium SUV segment, which includes Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour, Honda CR-V and Isuzu MU-X. The company is also working on upgrading dealerships and it will be sold through a separate section in the same dealership to give a premium feel for customers. The company is expected to price the SUV between Rs. 23-26 lakh and it will play a crucial role in the success of Y400 in India.
