Upcoming Mahindra Thar 5 door is likely to match the same set of engine specifications as the base Z2 Scorpio N with better road presence and extra legroom
Ahead of its market debut, the long-awaited 5-door Mahindra Thar is being tested across the nation. The mule sightings are becoming more frequent, and the more recent spy photographs provide updated information on the forthcoming SUV.
Powertrain
It is expected that the Thar 5-Door Model will be powered by the similar 2.0L mStallion petrol engine and 2.2L mHawk diesel engines coupled to 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmission options. The 2.0L petrol car in the Thar generates 150 horsepower and 300 Nm of torque, while the 2.2L diesel engine produces 130 bhp and 300 Nm.
Mahindra may have to recalibrate the Thar 5-Door variant to provide more power and torque because of the increased weight and dimensions. Also, it will likely get the same transmission options as it has in the Scorpio N model, however, 4X4 might not be on the cards.
Mahindra Thar 5-door: Exterior
Given that it has a much greater ramp-over angle due to its shorter wheelbase, the 3-Door Thar variant will be more suited for off-road enthusiasts. As per the latest updates, Mahindra is not standardising Thar versions with mechanically locking rear differentials. However, off-road fanatics who just want a base-spec model with a mechanically locking differential must now choose top-spec variants.
Mahindra Thar 5-door: Interiors
The interior is anticipated to have some minor tweaks but otherwise resembles the 3-door model. It appears that the new 5-door Thar model will keep the rough-looking design while adding fascinating features like toggle switches and strategically placed exposed screws. The 5-door Thar, however, adds a few extra amenities, including a front armrest that might also serve as a storage box, a sunglasses holder, and what appears to be a grab handle provision on the driver-side A-pillar.
It is expected that the second row of the 5-door Thar will offer more space than the 3-door model, due to its longer wheelbase, which is expected to be 300mm longer than that of the 3-door model. Unfortunately, the back doors appear small because of the projecting wheel arches, which may make entry and exit difficult.
Mahindra Thar 5-door: Launch and Competition
Mahindra is expected to debut the 5-door Thar later this year. It will compete with the upcoming 5-door Maruti Suzuki Jimny and Force Gurkha.
