TVS Beats Hero MotoCorp in Automatic Scooter Sales in Q1 FY2018

Jupiter has played significant role for TVS in overtaking Hero in automatic scooter sales for the first quarter of this fiscal

TVS Motor Company has beaten Hero MotoCorp in the automatic scooter segment of Indian market in the first quarter of current financial year. And this success is attributed to the high demands for the TVS Jupiter. Thanks to the increased sales of the 110 cc scooter, TVS has managed to climb up to second position in the bestselling scooter manufacturer list in India. With this, the company has reached its target to become the number 2 scooter brand in the country.

TVS Motor Company has also enhanced its market share to 15.12% compared to 13.39% in the same period last year. According to SIAM, the Hosur based two-wheeler manufacturer has sold 249,077 units of scooters between April and June this year, compared to the 183,805 units sold in Q1 of FY17. The sales numbers for the TVS Jupiter and TVS Wego have increased to 2.12 lakh units from 1.63 lakh units last year.

Speaking about Hero MotoCorp, the homegrown two-wheeler manufacturer that sells models like Maestro Edge, Duet and Pleasure has slided to third position and its market share has lowered from 15.37% to 12.73%. The company has seen a decline in the sales figure, as the brand registered 209,790 units compared to 210,876 units sold in the first quarter of last financial year.

The top spot has been retained by the Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India Pvt. Ltd as always, thanks to the Honda Activa series. The Japanese two-wheeler manufacturer has managed to increase its sales figure to 973,725 units in the first quarter of current fiscal, compared to 797,114 units sold in Q1 of last financial year.

Yamaha and Suzuki are positioned at fourth and fifth positions respectively. Both these two-wheeler manufacturers have seen their sales number increased. Piaggio Vehicles Pvt. Ltd that sells the premium scooters in the country has registered significant sales increase, as the company has sold 13,572 units in the Q1 of current financial year compared to 7,107 units in the same period last year.
