Toyota Yaris Cross has muscular styling compared to the regular hatchback and has several convenience as well as safety feature additions

Toyota has been using the Yaris brand name for different versions of its cars across the globe especially in the Asian markets. The Yaris is an accomplished hatchback in some parts the world but for India it is opted to be used as a sedan rivalling the likes of the popular Honda City and Maruti Suzuki Ciaz as well as the hot-selling Hyundai Verna.

Having been showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo and being the brand’s highlight product in the biennial event, the Japanese manufacturer will be commercially launching the sedan in the coming months in India in the C-segment. It is expected to be competitive priced against its rivals.

Toyota Yaris Cross Revealed RearWhile it will be interesting to see the market positioning of the Yaris sedan locally, Toyota is preparing to launch a Cross version of the Yaris hatchback for international marketplaces. Like any other hatchback based crossover, the Yaris Cross has the SUV intent going by the exterior and has design changes to back that up.

Toyota has grafted wheel arch mouldings, black cladding on sides, silver roof rails, skid plates protecting the under body and so on. The safety features made available in the top-of-the-line trims include multiple airbags – driver, curtain, driver knee and co-passenger.

Toyota Yaris Cross Revealed SideAs for the feature additions, the Yaris Cross gets HD instrument cluster, automatic climate control system, leather upholstered seat, two added speakers, sporty contrast red stitching on the gear knob and steering wheel, etc. The Cross comes powered by the same 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder petrol unit.

It is good enough to produce a maximum power output of 107 horsepower and 140 Nm of peak torque. The engine is connected to a five-speed manual transmission as standard while a CVT can be bought on a single high-spec variant. The upcoming Yaris sedan for India is more likely to use the same engine with identical power and torque outputs.

However, the transmission duties could be handled by six-speed manual and a CVT. The success of the mid-size sedan could determine whether Toyota would bring the Cross version to India or not. With the potential being there, it is expected to rival the Hyundai i20 Active as well as the Maruti Suzuki S-Cross.
