The legendary Toyota Land Cruiser nameplate is making a comeback to the US market with a retro-inspired design and off-road capabilities

The iconic Toyota Land Cruiser is set to make a return to the US market, bringing its legendary off-road prowess and a wave of excitement among enthusiasts. However, it won’t be the LC300 that’s available internationally. Rather, Toyota will likely introduce a different version of the Land Cruiser Prado, specifically designed for the US market.

The US-spec Land Cruiser will cater to the hardcore off-road segment, with plans to offer it in limited volumes and a retro-inspired design reminiscent of the Land Cruisers from the 1960s and 1970s. The SUV will retain the body-on-frame construction and will support electrification. It is expected to be a more affordable alternative to its luxurious counterpart, the Lexus GX.

While specific engine details have yet to be confirmed, rumours suggest the US-spec Land Cruiser may utilize a turbocharged 2.4-litre petrol hybrid powertrain. This electrified mill is already present in the Tacoma pickup truck, where it generates an impressive 326 HP of peak power and 465 pound-feet (640 Nm) of maximum torque.

Toyota intends to position the revived Land Cruiser as a niche product in the US, targeting a specialized market. The Japanese car giant is anticipating lower sales figures compared to mainstream SUVs, like the 4Runner and RAV4. The company plans to offer the new Land Cruiser in two trim levels, with a range-topping model boasting TRD Pro-inspired off-road enhancements.

In an intriguing development, Toyota has also hinted that a new Land Cruiser for the European market is in the making. While details remain undisclosed, it is speculated that a more rugged version of the Land Cruiser Prado may be introduced, capitalizing on the enduring popularity of the Land Cruiser moniker in Europe.

The return of the Toyota Land Cruiser to the US market signals a thrilling chapter for off-road enthusiasts, blending retro styling, cutting-edge technology, and formidable capabilities in a legendary package. The new American Land Cruiser is expected to launch later this year.
