Toyota Innova Hycross Vs Mahindra XUV700 will make for an interesting comparison despite being positioned in two different segments

Toyota Kirloskar Motor unveiled the Innova Hycross yesterday in India and its prices will be announced next month before the commencement of deliveries by the middle of January 2023. The premium MPV will be available in a total of five variants and it will appeal to a wide range of customers with a strong hybrid powertrain.

More importantly, it will also take on three-row SUVs including the Mahindra XUV700 in terms of pricing, features, practicality, etc. Here is how they compare:

Toyota Innova Hycross Vs Mahindra XUV700 Design & Dimensions:

Looks are subjective as both monocoque chassis based models sit in different segments but the SUV-inspired styling of the Innova Hycross helps in ditching its family buyer vibe. Rightfully so, it ups the ante in road presence with an upright front fascia boasting a prominent trapezoidal grille, sporty wide air intake on the bumper with triangular housing, wraparound LED headlamps and tail lamps, new DRLs, muscular creases, larger and wider wheels, etc.

The Mahindra XUV700 has a butch styling with a modern take on the signature grille section, C-shaped LED lighting elements, a large greenhouse, an aggressive side profile and rear. The XUV700 does give an authentic SUV look while the Innova Hycross is one of the good-looking MPVs available. But which one is better? As we said, it’s down to personal preference!

The premium MPV is 65 mm longer and 40 mm taller than the XUV700 but the latter is wider by 40 mm. The Innova Hycross has a longer wheelbase too by 100 mm and thus aiding in a more spacious cabin. In addition, the Hycross has a usable bootspace of 300 litres when all seats are up while it’s only 60 litres in the XUV700.

Dimensions Toyota Innova Hycross Mahindra XUV700
Length 4,755 mm 4,695 mm
Width 1,850 mm 1,890 mm
Height 1,795 mm 1,755 mm
Wheelbase 2,850 mm 2,750 mm
Fuel Tank Capacity 52 litres 60 litres
Bootspace (all seats up) 300 litres 60 litres

Toyota Innova Hycross Vs Mahindra XUV700 Interior and Features:

The Toyota Innova Hycross wears a black theme with black leather upholstery on the dashboard, seats and other areas. The interior is a radical departure compared to the Crysta with a layered dashboard, a 10.1-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system, dual-zone auto AC, an all-digital instrument console, a large dual-pane panoramic sunroof, cooled front seats, six airbags, disc brakes on all four wheels, Ottoman function for second-row chairs, plenty of storage spaces, Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 (ADAS features), and so on.

The XUV700 comes with a black and beige interior theme and the long list of features includes a dual 10.25-inch screen layout (one for infotainment and the other for instrumentation) with Adrenox tech, ADAS, Alexa-based voice commands, leatherette seats with perforations, flat-bottom leather-wrapped steering wheel, engine start/stop button, segment-largest panoramic sunroof, dual-zone climate control, an air purifier, 445 W 12-speaker Sony-sourced 3D audio, AI capabilities, personalised safety alerts, SmartCore cockpit domain controller tech with the third-gen Qualcomm Snapdragon Automotive Cockpit Platforms, wireless charger, cooled glovebox, flush-type smart door handles, drive modes, LED headlamps, etc.

Both are heavily packed with features and technologies but since the XUV700 is less expensive, it could grab plenty of customers who are at the point of comparison.

Toyota Innova Hycross Vs Mahindra XUV700 Engine & Specifications:

The Toyota Innova Hycross derives power from a 2.0-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine producing a maximum power output of 174 hp and 197 Nm of peak torque while the strong hybrid iteration of the same engine kicks out 186 hp. The former is paired with a CVT while the latter is linked with an e-CVT.

Specifications Toyota Innova Hycross Mahindra XUV700
Engine 2.0L NA petrol/2.0L Hybrid Petrol 2.0L Petrol/2.2L Diesel
Power 174 hp/186 hp 200 hp/155 hp (185 hp)
Torque 197 Nm/ – 380 Nm/360 Nm (450 Nm)
Transmission Six-Speed MT & Six-Speed AT CVT/e-CVT

The Mahindra XUV700 is equipped with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder mStallion turbocharged petrol engine pushing out 200 hp and 380 Nm. The 2.2-litre four-cylinder mHawk diesel makes 155 hp and 360 Nm in its lower state of tune in MX while it kicks out 185 hp and 420 Nm in other trims (450 Nm in AT). The XUV700 has the upper hand in performance but the strong hybrid petrol engine in the Innova Hycross with a claimed mileage of 21.1 kmpl will tick the box for many.

Toyota Innova Hycross Vs Mahindra XUV700 Conclusion:

The Innova Hycross will be retailed with seven- and eight-seater configurations while the Mahindra XUV700 comes in five- and seven-seater trims in a more expansive range. The former is expected to cost between Rs. 22 lakh and Rs. 28 lakh (ex-showroom) while the latter costs Rs. 13.44 lakh and Rs. 24.94 lakh (ex-showroom). In terms of pricing, the XUV700 definitely takes the cake but it commands a waiting period of up to 15 months for top-spec variants.

While the Innova Hycross does not offer an AWD trim, the XUV700 is better at off-roading with the availability of AWD in diesel. Both are packed with advanced features and technologies including ADAS. The Innova Hycross will lure in more family-based customers and people like to get chauffeured around with good practicality (991L bootspace when all seats are down) but for those wanting a spacious SUV with all the glorious torque of a diesel engine, XUV700 should be the choice.
