Toyota Etios Cross : Expert Review and Road Test

Toyota Etios Cross: Not a crossover, but still better than the Liva

What is a Cross? Is it just the design which goes between the Hatchback and the SUV or few plastic or fiber parts around the car making it bigger than the hatchback? However, there is a new segment, which has taken birth in the Indian automotive market. You might have heard about the Cross Polo from VW, Fiat Avventura and now the Etios Cross, I wonder the word Cross from the actual segment Crossover (CUV – Crossover Utility Vehicle) is not utilized efficiently.

The new segment will do well for Toyota as the Indian market is always open for new designs and technologies. As to the difference from the Hatchback, you can only notice that high amount of plastic or fiber is used around the car, which neither makes it bigger nor gives it a taller look, which fails from the typical crossover.

This has to be accepted, the Toyota Etios Cross features an awesomely designed front grille, protected with a silver grille guard combined with fog lamps and built-in indicators.

As said earlier, the hatchback is beefed up with side cladding, roof rails, ORVM with turn indicators and diamond cut alloys, which might impress you. At the rear you can find the roof spoiler which goes with the colour of the body and the Etios Cross badging.

Talking about the beefy side of the Etios cross, the side cladding adds up around 20Kg to the total weight of the car. With all the cosmetic and fabrication upgrades the Cross is 120mm longer, 40mm wider and 45mm taller than the Liva hatchback, with 175 mm ground clearance which is again 5mm higher.

On the inside, matching to the attitude on the outside it carries a piano black interior with door armrests, unlike the dull interior of the Liva, though the quality of the interiors hits you back with a feel of plastics in use. Thanks and no-thanks to Toyota.

The sporty seats offer good position to the shoulders, we were quite overwhelmed with the leg room and the headroom offered on the inside. You can also see the Etios Cross badging embedded in the seats. The Cross also features a 2-Din standard stereo with AUX-IN, Bluetooth connectivity and USB. The top end vehicle comes with built-in audio controls on the steering and cooled 13 L glove box.

The Toyota Cross’s standard equipment includes dual front SRS airbags for passenger and the driver and to ensure the safety on the road it has the ABS with EBD, fog lights, alloy wheels, music system, driver seat height adjustment & Rear wiper with defogger.

Technically nothing much changes the Toyota Etios Cross from the Liva, to be noted is the effective suspension, which gives you a pleasant ride on a bumpy road. Even the engines are same that you find on the Liva and Etios sedan.

The 1.5 Litre petrol engine churns up 90HP and 132nm of torque and does the 0-100kmph in 11 seconds and claims 16.78 kmpl. The 1.2 Litre 4 cylinder petrol engine pumps out 80HP and 104Nm and fuel efficiency claims 17.71kmpl. The 1.4 Litre Common Rail Diesel Engine with inter-cooler delivers 67HP from a generous torque of 1800-2500RPM and claims 23.59KMPL.

The flat torque range of the car is impressive, you can drive the car in slow-moving traffic while in 3rd gear, you will not need to shuffle between the gear stick.
