Toyota Calya is a mini MPV, which made its global premiere at the 2016 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS), earlier this year. In the Indonesian market, the Calya is positioned in the Low Cost Green Car (LCGC) segment. Calya comes heavily inspired by the Daihatsu UFC-3 concept, which was showcased at the 2014 GIIAS.

In Indonesian market, the car is pitted against the Datsun Go+ Panca, and positioned below the Toyota Avanza. In India, Toyota has seen immense success with the Innova, which launched in its new avatar as the Innova Crysta earlier this year. And the Innova Crysta too earned quite positive response in short time. With the emerging markets like India keen toward the utility vehicles, Toyota might consider launching the car in the country in near future.

The Toyota Calya incorporates the automaker’s latest design language. Based on the Ayga hatchback, Calya shares some design cues with its larger sibling Toyota Innova Crysta. The car looks muscular and offers spacious cabin for seven occupants.

The Toyota Calya is a seven seater mini MPV, which is priced between Rp. 129,650,000 (Rs. 6.60 lakh) and Rp. 150,000,000 (Estimated Rs. 7.64 lakh) in the Indonesian market. The car is sold in five different variants there, which are – 1.2 E Std MT, 1.2 E MT, 1.2 E AT, 1.2 G MT and 1.2 G AT.

Toyota Calya is available with a single engine option, which is a 1.2-litre (1,197cc) in-line, four-cylinder DOHC dual VVT-i 3NR-VE petrol unit. Mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, this engine churns out 88 PS of peak power at 6,000 RPM and 107.87 NM of peak torque at 4,200 RPM; and there is a 4-speed automatic transmission also on offer with the Calya.

On the suspension front the Toyota Calya is equipped with MacPherson Strut with coil spring and stabilizer at the front, and semi-independent torsion beam axle with coil spring at rear. For braking duty the front wheels get ventilated discs and rear wheels sport drum brakes.

Based on the Agya hatchback, Toyota Calya bears a muscular appearance. In terms of design, the Calya shares some design cues with the Toyota Innova Crysta as well, which has already earned popularity in the Indian market after being launched few months back.

The car sports sharp and large headlamps with a thick chrome bar running between the headlamp clusters. The black front grille looks massive with an all black look and sports horizontal slats. Together with the muscular front bumper it comes giving reminiscence of the Toyota Vios sedan. The fog lamps are positioned vertically, and they look like inspired by Toyota Camry sedan; while the hood features subtle creases.

The rear profile gets similar inverted ‘L’ shaped taillights like Toyota Innova Crysta. Apart from that, the tailgate sports a thick chrome bar just above the registration enclosure.

Dimensionally, the Toyota Calya MPV measures 4,070mm in length, 1,655mm in width, 1,600mm in height and 2,525mm of wheelbase. It also gets 180mm of ground clearance, which helps the Calya to tackle the challenge of potholes and little bit of rough road conditions.

Toyota Calya’s interior has been designed very cleverly, which reflects the practicality and the spaciousness. The cabin gets a three spoke steering wheel with silver accents. The instrument cluster sports dual analog dials, while a digital MID is also there. The centre console gets a 2-DIN multimedia system with CD, AUX and USB connectivity, and the gear lever is integrated to the multilayered dashboard.

Apart from these, the dual tone interior sports second-row HVAC vents, front arm rest, power windows, 60:40 split foldable rear seats, charging port for second row seats. The seating layout is 2+3+2, and the car offers sufficient space for the occupants offering a comfortable journey experience.
