The table of top 10 selling sedans in March 2018 encountered close sales battle between City, Ciaz and Verna in the C-segment

The leading position in the top-selling sedans chart has seen the latest generation Dzire registering big numbers once again. For several months in succession, the Dzire has assumed its top status among sedans and in overall sales lies only second to Alto.

Standing as a testament to the customers’ approval of new launches, Hyundai Verna finished just behind the established Honda City and Maruti Ciaz as only 529 units separated the three C-segment sedans. In a similar fashion to the premium hatchback segment where Baleno and Elite i20 have close sales battles, the sedan segment has seen Ciaz and City running toe-to-toe to each other from the very beginning.

However, in March 2018, City had the upper hand ahead of Ciaz and the new-gen Verna. Standing in at fifth position, the Hyundai Xcent subcompact sedan has always played second-fiddle to the Maruti Dzire in its segment with 3,200 examples being delivered in the third of the year.

Despite less numbers compared to the Dzire, the Xcent is running strongly in its position in its segment ahead of the rest of the competitors. However, with the arrival of the heavily updated Honda Amaze next month, the pecking order could be in for a change.

The entry of Toyota Yaris is expected to throw some tough challenge to the City-Ciaz-Verna trio as well. Ford’s Aspire sedan is also due for a facelift in the next couple of months and it finished March 2018 with 2,145 units. Tata delivered just 69 units fewer than the Aspire last month and its performance-based JTP variant is on the horizon.

Down the line, its Zest sibling has been in and out of top 10 but last month it registered 1,604 units and stayed ninth. Skoda’s Rapid rounded out the bestselling sedan chart with 913 units in tenth position.
