Top 10 selling hatchbacks in May 2018 has witnessed usual models from Maruti and Hyundai while Tiago and Kwid filled up the rest of the table
The significant advantage of Maruti Suzuki is indeed its variety of cars in the mass market segments, especially on the base end. Almost all of them are hatchbacks that have been available for years while other new products have indeed made a name for themselves. Standing in line with the company’s popularity among buyers has been the list of best-selling hatchbacks every month.
In the fifth month of the year, Maruti Suzuki’s five popular hatchbacks have made their presence felt in the top ten and all of them are pretty much pretty every single time in the sales table. Topping the charts was the Alto budget hatchback that stayed ahead of the Baleno and Swift with a total of 21,890 units.

Coming in at second ahead of Swift was the Baleno with 19,398 unit sales in May 2018 and is registering consistent high numbers every passing month. The ever-increasing popularity of Baleno goes on to showcase the buyers’ attraction towards premium vehicles as well. Glancing over the entire chart, it is easy to get carried away by the ever-existing presence of Maruti and Hyundai hatchbacks but the potential for growth can be observed courtesy of the Tiago and Kwid.
If correctly positioned with good features and efficient powertrains, the recipe for success can always be visualized. For example, Tata and Renault have their top-selling vehicles in the entire market at the affordable hatchback space. The Tiago graced India with a whole new design philosophy alongside good equipment level.
With the SUV-ish styling and feature-loaded interior, the Kwid can be credited for Renault’s success in the last couple of years despite its popularity facing a dip recently. Both went with the same strategy and became VFM products.
The Tata Tiago outsold Kwid and Eon for eight position with a total of 7,060 deliveries. The Maruti Suzuki Celerio, which brought the affordable AMT to the masses, ended up seventh with 10,160 retailed units. Despite Kwid finishing ninth with 5,196 unit sales, its popularity has certainly been dwindling compared to the recent past.
