Top 10 selling cars in May 2019 saw Maruti Suzuki covering eight out of ten positions despite enduring 25.1 per cent YoY sales decline

Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) dominated the sales charts once again for the month of May as eight out of top ten positions belonged to the brand. The Indo-Japanese manufacturer saw a massive sales decline of 25.1 per cent last month as 1,21,018 units were sold against 1,61,497 units in the same month last year.

The de-growth led to Maruti Suzuki losing 3.1 per cent market share while Hyundai gained 2.9 per cent market share in May 2019 amidst encountering 6 per cent volume fall. All the car makers faced sales decline last month except for Mahindra & Mahindra that finished in third place behind Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai with 1 per cent YoY volume increase.

The Swift hatchback registered the most sales with 17,039 units as it got back to the leading position. After going on sale in February 2018, the latest Swift carries on the success of its predecessor and it finished ahead of the mainstay Maruti Suzuki Alto, Dzire and Baleno.

The lead maintained by Swift was very narrow to Alto as only 645 units separated them and it was the similar case until the fifth place finished Wagon R. The Dzire, country’s best-selling sedan, ended up third with 16,196 units while the Baleno premium hatchback and the top-selling model at Nexa slotted in at fourth with a total of 15,176 units.

The latest generation Wagon R launched in January 2019 has been another success story for the leading automaker in India and with increased upmarket status the tall boy hatchback finished fifth with 14,561 unit sales in May 2019. In the second half of the table, the Eeco moved in to sixth and its production has been increased recently to fill in the void left by the defunct Omni.

It recorded 11,739 units ahead of Hyundai Creta, the most sold SUV in India last month, and Hyundai Elite i20. The second generation Ertiga registered a highly appreciable tally of 8,864 units and it finished ninth with Vitara Brezza in tenth. The competitive space Vitara Brezza dominates has seen increased rivals recently and resultantly the segment recorded 11 per cent YoY growth.
