Top 10 selling cars in December 2016 saw Maruti Suzuki dominating as ever with 7 models; Hyundai makes its presence felt with the i twins

Like the rest of 2016, Maruti Suzuki’s domination continued in the last month of the year in the Indian passenger car segment. Among the top 10 selling cars, the Indo-Japanese automaker alone has 7 models while the South Korean auto giant Hyundai has two. The top positions are occupied by the big guns such as Alto, Dzire, Swift and WagonR respectively.

Interestingly, major models have suffered from sales decline compared to the same month in 2015. Only Renault Kwid has registered 28% YoY growth, as it sold 8,797 units last month while in the last month of 2015 the Kwid registered 6,888 units.

Of the Maruti Suzuki vehicles, the Alto sits at the top of the chart with 17,351 units last month marking a 23% decline than the respective month in 2015, when it sold 22,589 units. At the second and third positions are the Swift Dzire compact sedan and the Swift hatchback with 14,643 units and 14,538 units respectively.

Despite being in the domestic market for quite long time, the popularity of the reliable Maruti Suzuki WagonR is undeniable. The tallboy hatchback managed to stay among the top five, but lost one position to its sibling Swift. In November, WagonR was positioned at the third place. Last month the car registered 14,176 units compared to 14,645 units in December 2015, marking a 3% decline.

The other Maruti Suzuki vehicles in the list are the Baleno, Vitara Brezza and Celerio. These are positioned at 7th, 8th and 10th position respectively. Hyundai Grand i10 and the Elite i20 sit at 5th and 6th ensuring the brand to keep second place in the industry overall. The Grand i10 has registered 10,519 units last month while the Elite i20 recorded 9,803 units. Both the cars faced sales decline of 17% and 6% respectively, compared to December 2015 sales chart.
