Maruti Suzuki WagonR was the most sold passenger car in India in 2022 as it finished ahead of Baleno, Swift and Nexon
In the 2022 calendar year, Maruti Suzuki’s WagonR finished on top of the overall passenger vehicle sales standings as 2,21,850 units were sold. The tall riding entry-level hatchback has been a popular nameplate for years in the domestic market. Currently, the WagonR is powered by a 1.0-litre petrol and a 1.2-litre petrol engine with DualJet Dual VVT tech and idle start/stop function.
The Baleno was the second most sold car in India last year as 1,85,665 units were recorded. The premium hatchback received a big update in 2022 with a thoroughly redesigned exterior and a more upmarket interior with the inclusion of new features and technologies. The new model has certainly helped in further increasing its sales tally over rivals.
The Maruti Suzuki Swift finished in the third position with 1,76,424 unit sales. The compact hatchback has been the unassailable leader in its segment and it continues to post consistent volumes. The next generation Swift is only expected to arrive in 2024 with a hybrid powertrain. The Tata Nexon finished in the fourth position.

The compact SUV was the most sold SUV in the country last year with 1,68,278 units. The Nexon made its market debut back in 2017 and it received a big update in early 2020. The sub-four-metre SUV is equipped with powerful petrol and diesel engines in an expansive range and is also loaded with features, topped off by the five-star Global NCAP safety rating.
The Maruti Suzuki Alto could only manage to finish in the fifth position with 1,62,548 units. However, the arrival of the new-gen Alto K10 could help in improving its volume tally this year. In the second half of the table, Maruti Suzuki Dzire finished in the sixth position with 1,59,919 unit sales as it slotted in at sixth ahead of Hyundai Creta.
The midsize SUV headed its segment comfortably with 1,40,895 units ahead of the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, Brezza and Tata Punch. The MPV posted 1,33,814 units while the Brezza and Punch recorded 1,30,563 units and 1,29,895 units respectively.
