Some models have maintained their lead in respective segments while sales have down for most of the products last month
November hasn’t been a great month for the auto industry as the festival season was dull and sales were lower than what the manufacturers expected. The only companies, which has managed to register positive growth was Mahindra and Honda thanks to the introduction of newer models, while most of the other companies posted marginal negative growth but the top six manufacturers have increased market share also. In this article, we are taking a look at the segment leaders and runner-up in each segment.
In the entry-level segment, Maruti Suzuki Alto continues its domination as the company sold 18,643 units last month compared to just 5419 units by Renault Kwid in the runner-up position, both models registered negative growth. In the A2 segment, Maruti Suzuki Wagon R topped the sales chart in November and the hatchback has improved sales compared to October.
The new generation Wagon R is expected to make its debut next month and it will help the model to improve sales. The new kid on the block Santro finished in the second position with strong sales of 9009 units in the first month and the company has already received more than 40,000 bookings as the hatchback is expected to perform really well.
In the hatchback segment, the new generation Swift is smashing all record as it became the best selling model in November as the company sold 22,191 units and the difference between the runner-up has increased considerably as Hyundai has managed to sell 9252 units of Grand i10 as the hatchback registered negative growth of 30 per cent year-on-year.
In the premium hatchback segment, the Baleno continues its lead over Elite i20 as the company sold 18,649 units and registered positive growth of 5 per cent. The Elite i20 is also selling well with 10,555 units sold in November and the hatchback has posted 3 per cent sales growth compared to the same month last year.
Maruti Suzuki Dzire is the undisputed king in the compact sedan market since its launch and the new model continues its good run with a big lead over the runner-up in the second, which is the second generation Amaze as it registered sales growth of 146 per cent in November but sales are low when compared to October.
The recent updates for Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza have helped the model to edge ahead of the competition and sales are almost constant for the last few months but in November, the Vitara Brezza registered marginal negative growth of 1 per cent and the runner-up is Nexon with 4224 units sold last month.
The C-sedan segment is witnessing lower sales volume even with new launches as Maruti Suzuki Ciaz is currently leading the segment with sales of 3838 units as the recent facelift hasn’t helped the sedan to improve sales. Honda City finished in the runner-up with 3531 units sold last month as the model registered 7 per cent growth in November.
Maruti Suzuki launched the new generation Ertiga last month and it helped the new model to lead the MPV segment in India. The Ertiga registered 359 per cent growth compared to October. The Bolero finished in the runner-up position with sales of 5582 units and the UV posted 14 per cent sales growth compared to same month last year.
The volume in crossover segment is low as people prefer compact SUV or MPVs rather than jacked up hatchback models. Honda WR-V is leading the crossover segment in November with sales of 2786 units even though volume is down compared to the same month last year. Maruti Suzuki S-Cross finished in the runner position with sales difference of around 350 units.

The Creta is leading the SUV segment with the company selling 9677 unit last. The Scorpio finished in the second position with sales of 2906 units as Mahindra has revised the features list and we can expect the positive momentum to continue in coming months.
The premium D-segment is also witnessing slow down as the top-selling model is Skoda Octavia and the company has managed to sell 292 units but when compared to last year the sedan registered 11 per cent growth. Toyota Corolla Altis finished in the runner-up position with negative sales growth of 41 per cent compared to same month last year.
Toyota Innova Crysta is the undisputed king in the premium MPV segment, even though sales have come down compared to October but still, the company has managed to sell 5425 units, which is impressive considering the price and the Tata Hexa got the runner-up position with monthly sales of just 487 units.
The fight in the premium sedan is heating up as the Skoda Superb has managed to take the top position from the Volkswagen Passat by one unit as Skoda sold 77 units last month while the parent company VW sold 76 units. The Passat registered marginal month-on-month growth and basically, both these models underpins are same.
Like the Innova Crysta, the Fortuner is the also the segment leader in premium SUV segment and it continues to lead in November with sales of 1475 units, which is low compared to October and Year-on-Year growth is also negative. Ford Endeavour took the runner-up position and the SUV also posted negative growth.
