Tesla manufacturing plant in India is highly possible after the launch of the affordable Model 3 global electric car in the market

India is portraying itself as the next hub for electric vehicles. The government’s encouraging policy might get a huge boost if he American EV maker Tesla sets up a manufacturing plant in the country. As it seems, it might well happen here. After Union transport Minister Nitin Gadkari’s recent visit to Tesla’s factory near San Francisco in US the possibility has brighten.

Tesla already confirmed it will launch its upcoming sedan Model 3 in India. The American automaker might sets up a manufacturing plant in the country only after seeing the response of Model 3. The Model 3 sedan is the cheapest sedan from the EV maker. It has already garnered around 4 lakh pre launch bookings. Some the bookings have been made by Indian customers as well.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has proposed the company to set up the plant in India as is Asia hub. He has also promised them of providing land to the nearest port of their choice and all other necessary supports as well. If Tesla considers setting up the plant in India, it would give the EV market in the country a huge boost.

Currently, Indian customers are not very keen about electric or hybrid vehicles. Still the Toyota Camry Hybrid has sold more than 700 units in India. Nissan is all set to launch its X-Trail Hybrid SUV in the country. Also the Honda is gearing up to launch the Accord Hybrid sedan in India. Mahindra has already two of its EV cars launched. So far, the Indian market is opening up slowly toward the electric and hybrid cars.

The Indian government is encouraging the purchase and sells of the electric and hybrid vehicles. The government offers discounts in purchase of hybrid and electric vehicles. It also has an ambitious plan to make the most of the country’s vehicle fleet electric powered within few years.
