Tesla Beats Mercedes, BMW and Audi in US luxury car sales as the Model S outsold S-Class, 7-Series, A8 and Panamera

Tesla is giving the luxury automaker like Mercedes-Benz, Audi, BMW, Porsche run for money in US luxury car market. In the luxury sedan segment in US, Tesla Model S is giving tough competition to reputed premium sedans like Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7-Series, Audi A8 and Porsche Panamera. In quarter-3 sales of 2016, Tesla Model S has sold 9,156 units, which is 59% higher compared to its Q3 sales in 2015 when it sold 5,741 units.

Tesla Model S’s two closest rivals in Q3 2016 has been BMW 7-Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class, which sold 3,634 units and 3,138 units respectively. While cars like Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7-Series, Audi A8 experienced slightly lowered sales in 2015, Tesla Model S has seen 51% sales increase in last year compared to 2014.

In 2015 Mercedes-Benz sold 21,934 units of S-Class in US, while Tesla sold 24,202 units of Model S in the country. In just three years, Tesla Model S has built a remarkable image in US luxury sedan market. Tesla delivered 25,202 units of Model S last year, which gave the company an impressive 25% market share in luxury sedan market in US.

Tesla’s success is largely attributed to the EV maker’s aggressive stance. It has built a wide SuperCharger network in recent times, and this infrastructure has silently helped the company in its business growth. In 2016 the American EV maker plans to install 300 more charging stations in the country, which will bring it to a total of 900 charging stations. The company is also promoting installations of destination-chargers at hotels and shopping destinations.

Apart from electric powertrain Tesla Model S also benefits from autonomous driving technology, which enhance its appeal further compared to other luxury sedans. The company has planned to sell around 80,000 units to 90,000 units of cars by the end of 2016, which will comprise both Model S and Model X. The company is also working on its latest offering Model 3.
