Brand ambassador: Lionel Messi

Tata Motors has launched the long awaited Tiago hatchback today starting from an ultra-competitive price tag of Rs. 3.20 lakh for the base XB Petrol and Rs. 5.54 lakh for the XZ Diesel range-topper (ex-showroom prices, Delhi). The Tiago can be considered as one of the vital products in the Indian automaker entire history as it put Tata through its paces and made the engineers go back to the drawing board for a fresh piece of metal.

It connects the gap between the once-revolutionary Nano and the larger Bolt hatchback ans is developed with inputs from design studios in India, UK and Italy. That is in region of the fleet operative customers’ unhindered choice, the Indica which was known to be less of a common man’s commuter. With the Tiago, Tata braces for a highly-challenging mid-size hatchback segment dominated by the Maruti Suzuki Celerio and Hyundai i10 having its own band of customers.

Tata Tiago Spotted In Dealership Ahead Of Launch-5

Tata Motors had no choice but to remove the Zica name, as it pronounced the same as a deadly virus, into a very quirky yet youthful moniker called Tiago in late February 2016 through ‘#FantasticoNameHunt’ crowd sourcing competition. The company’s intentions to go global with the Tiago were evident from the signing of Argentine football great and Barcelona starlet, Lionel Messi, as brand ambassador last year for the #madeofgreat campaign.

All-new design language:

It’s the first model to have a new design language dubbed as “Impact” which translates to ‘Immediate IMPACT at first sight. Lasting IMPACT over time’. Tata Motors’ recent launches Bolt and Zest, essentially re-engineered versions of Vista, hadn’t gone how they planned but the unshaken company didn’t take a step back in the making of the all-new Tiago. While the Bolt and Zest twins share plenty of elements with the Vista, the Tiago was developed from ground-up as only the base floorpan is from the original Indica.

Tata Motors unveiled the Kite 5 sedan along with the Tiago hatchback at the Auto Expo 2016 in early February. The subcompact sedan is based on the Tiago inside and out and will rival against the Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire, Honda Amaze, Ford Figo Aspire and Hyundai Xcent in the popular segment. It is expected to be launched later this year, probably around the festival season eyeing more sales.

Excellent Pricing:

The Maruti Suzuki Celerio costs between Rs. 4.03 – 5.90 lakh, Hyundai Grand i10 between Rs. 4.34 – 5.15 lakh, Chevrolet Beat between Rs. 4.32 – 6.57 lakh and the Tata Tiago between Rs. 3.20-5.54 lakh. With five petrol and diesel variants, the hatchback from Tata wins the price-wise challenge as the base petrol variant is a massive Rs. 83,000 cheaper than that of the benchmark Celerio and the top-end diesel model is over a lakh less expensive than the Chevrolet Beat.

Engine and Mileage:

Tiago engines

Mechanically, the Tata Tiago hatchback has one petrol and one diesel engine. The 1.2-litre four-valves-per-cylinder DOHC Revotron petrol engine has lightweight all-aluminium construction and variable cam timing for intake. The three-pod motor develops 85 PS at 6,000 rpm and 114 Nm of torque at 3,500 rpm mated with a five speed manual transmission.

The 1.05-litre three-cylinder Revotorq diesel engine is basically a downsized and improved version of the Indica’s 1.4-litre four-pod unit that develops 70 PS maximum power at 4,000 rpm and 140 Nm of peak torque between 1,800 and 3,000 rpm. The motor has aluminium head housing twin cams and 4V per cylinder. It is connected with a five-speed manual as well sending power to the front wheels. Diesel mileage is claimed at 23.84 kmpl and petrol at an astonishing 27.28 kmpl.

The success of the Maruti Suzuki Celerio was largely down to its 1.0-litre AMT petrol engine. It will surely be a catalyst for Tata Tiago’s volume sales as well but as for now, the company decided to stick with the five-speed manual gearbox at the launch. However, an AMT option will be introduced in a later stage as confirmed by Tata Motors.

First-in-class Multi drive modes:

The Tiago is based on the heavily modified Xo platform of the Indica hatchback and the diesel 1.05-litre and the petrol 1.2-litre engines have two driving modes. The City and Eco mode alter the characteristics of the engine and will be helpful in achieving power and fuel economy as per the selection of the driver.

Dimensions:

The Tata Tiago measures 3,746 mm in length which is 146 mm more than the Celerio and 161 mm longer than the Hyundai Grand i10. The 2,400 mm wheelbase is 25 mm shorter than the Maruti small hatchback but the wheels are pushed to the extreme to increase knee room and cabin space.

It wins over both the models marginally width wise as being 1,647 mm wide it can comfortable seat three occupants in the rear. Standing at 1,535 mm tall, it’s down by a whisker on both models.
