Tata Nexon subcompact SUV with AMT gearbox was spied testing; expected to be launched at the end of this year

The Tata Nexon subcompact SUV has been spied running trials once again and the images have surfaced on the internet. Courtesy of MotorOctane, the new set of spy shots emerged has revealed that the Indian auto giant is working on an AMT variant as well. Expected to be launched in the third quarter of 2016, the new compact SUV carries all the significance as it enters once of the highly desirable segments in the Indian market.

The production version of the Tata Nexon will have the design cues inspired from its concept model showcased at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo. It will be built on a heavily modified Indica’s X1 platform and reports are that it will have the AMT option on both petrol and diesel variants. The launch time of the Tata Nexon could be before the arrival of Kite 5 compact sedan which is tipped to grace showrooms by festival season.

Tata’s long-awaited Tiago hatchback is being launched today and the before the end of 2016, the company will have a fresh product line-up in the volume churning segments. The presence of AMT (Automated Manual Transmission) sourced from Magneti Marelli will be an added advantage for the Nexon as it will rival against rival Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Ford EcoSport and Mahindra TUV300.

As for the mechanicals, the Tata Nexon will be equipped with two engines: a 1.2-litre turbo-charged Revotron petrol engine and an all-new 1.5-litre diesel motor. It will be the most powerful subcompact diesel SUV as the 1.5-litre unit is capable of producing 110 PS of power and 260 Nm of peak torque with three driving modes. It will be paired with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard and the AMT could be offered as option. The turbo petrol develops 89 bhp and 140 Nm of torque.

It is expected to be priced between Rs. 5.5 lakh and Rs. 9.5 lakh. The all-new interiors will come with three-spoke steering wheel with controls for audio and voice commands, a new instrument cluster, a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with reversing camera, etc. It sits 200 mm above the ground and will be shod on 16-inch alloy wheels in the range-topping models.
