Tata Harrier boasts a large 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, MirrorLink and Android Auto connectivity

Tata Motors’ next big push in the domestic market is on the premium compact SUV segment via Harrier. The five-seater will compete against Hyundai Creta as well as Jeep Compass with expected on-road price of around Rs. 15.5 lakh to Rs. 22 lakh. The Harrier has been a long sought after vehicle in recent times courtesy of the H5X concept it is derived from and the teaser campaign revealing its capabilities.

The JLR-owner has tested the Harrier for over 2.2 million km across different weather and surface conditions and it is confirmed to have multiple driving modes along with terrain response modes. The exterior of the production version released a few weeks ago indicates its several commonalities with the H5X concept and based on the latest teaser video and spy shots, we have come up with a render of the interior.

Unmistakably, the cabin resembles H5X in plenty of ways and has a dual-tone premium dashboard layout with black and brown finish. Compared to the latest crop of Tata vehicles, the Harrier will have a more minimalistic use of buttons and the 8.8-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system grafted in the middle is a centre piece of attraction.

Visteon, the same company that makes digital instrument cluster for the Range Rover Velar, has built the infotainment screen for Harrier and it will offer smartphone integration, sat-nav, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity and MirrorLink provision while doubling up as display for reverse parking camera.

The audio system will continue to be provided by Harman and we all know it makes the segment best unit in other Tata models. The dashboard has a lower silver band running across while silver accents can be found on the air conditioning vents, gear shifter, parts of the centre stack and the multi-spoke steering wheel with mounted controls.

The top-end models will boast brown quilted leather seat upholstery and may offer multi-way adjustable powered seats while the steering wheel will also be wrapped in leather. The key fob will have access to boot release button as well. Other upmarket features expected on the Harrier are automatic climate control system, multi angle camera display and so on.

The Harrier is based on the OMEGA platform which is derived from Land Rover’s D8 and uses a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel motor termed as Kryotec as it gets inspired by the Cryogenic rocket engine. It produces a maximum power output of 140 hp and is mated to either a six-speed manual or a six-speed torque converter AT sourced from Hyundai.

The Harrier will officially enter the market in January 2019 and bookings have already commenced for Rs. 30,000 across dealerships. Tata will reportedly offer only the six-speed manual transmission at the launch and a seven-seater variant with perhaps a different nomenclature may arrive in late 2019 or early 2020.
