The Harrier and H7X might get a newly developed 1.6 L four-cylinder turbocharged engine and the company is also working on an automatic variant of Harrier

Tata Motors is currently offering the Harrier only with a 2.0 L diesel engine sourced from FCA. Rajendra Petkar, Chief Technology Officer, Tata Motors has confirmed that the Harrier will get a petrol engine in future but the company hasn’t taken the final decision on whether to develop a new engine or outsource it from other partners.

He said that the company already has a 1.2 L 3-cylinder petrol engine, which does duty on so many models and they always had a four-cylinder version in mind. So the upcoming engine could be a 1.6 L four-cylinder engine with a turbocharger to increase power output and this engine might make its way in the bigger H7X, which is currently under development.

The advanced Ingenium series petrol engine of JRL will be too expensive for Harrier, which is why the company ruled it out. Tata hasn’t given more details about power output and torque figures. But if the company decided to outsource the petrol engine then the Harrier might get the 1.4 L turbocharged petrol engine from Compass.

This engine produces 160 hp of power at 3,750 rpm and 250 Nm of torque at 1,750 rpm. In Compass, this engine returns 14.1 kmpl and it comes with a 7-speed automatic gearbox. Rajendra Petkar also confirmed that the company will introduce an automatic variant of Harrier in India but he didn’t give details about the launch time.

Earlier reports have indicated that the Harrier will get a 6-speed torque converter gearbox from Hyundai and we have already spotted the automatic variant of Harrier on the test. The upcoming H7X is also likely to get this transmission and we are expecting the bigger model to come with more premium features compared to Harrier.

The H7X is likely to come with same 2.0 L diesel engine from Harrier but it will produce 170 PS of power and 350 Nm of torque. The manual gearbox might be the same 6-speed unit from Harrier. The 2.0 L engine on Harrier produces 140 PS and 350 Nm. Tata Motors is going to reveal the H7X on March 5th at the Geneva Motor Show.
