Suzuki Vitara S 140PS with Turbo ‘Boosterjet’ Launched in the UK; deliveries commence from January

Suzuki has given the all-new Turbo Boosterjet petrol engine debut under the hood of its India-bound Vitara crossover which broke out of the sixteen-year hiatus at the 2014 Paris Motor Show.

The Suzuki Vitara S 140PS variant has been revealed for the UK market and deliveries of the model are about to commence in January. The sporty crossover is propelled by a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine with direct injection producing 140PS power and 220Nm of peak torque available from 1,500 to 4,000 rpm. That’s a 20PS and 64Nm increase compared to the 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol motor.

The Turbo Boosterjet engine is the first application of the Japanese manufacturer’s new efficient family of engines featuring a new wastegate technology. The turbo petrol mill has wastegate valve closing during heavy application of throttle to increase boost pressure of the turbocharger.

In order to reduce pumping losses, the valve remains open under normal running conditions and therefore caters for increase in power whilst fuel consumption is kept comparatively minimal. The re-engineered turbo with 1.1 bar boost pressure is coupled directly to the cylinder head and the exhaust manifold is installed in the cylinder head casting – this design allows for minimising the turbo lag encountered by the engine.

With the power unit from a new family of engines, the Vitara S can accelerate from 0-100kph in 10.2 seconds and gets to a top speed of 200kmph. Power is distributed to all four wheels through ALLGRIP AWD system and Suzuki says the six-speed manual and six-speed automatic gearboxes can replicate identical performance figures as mentioned above.

The four driving modes offered are: Auto, Sport, Snow and Lock. Carbon dioxide emissions are claimed at 127g/km and fuel efficiency for the turbo petrol engine is rated at a competitive 18.51kmpl.

The features list for the Vitara S consists of LED headlamps with red projector covering, red stitches in cabin, black side body moulds, satin silver door mirrors, 17-inch black alloy wheels and a rear spoiler. The standard equipment offered are cruise control, electric power windows, DAB Radio, USB and Bluetooth connectivity, seven airbags and automatic air conditioning.

The Suzuki Vitara S 140PS will be up for sale from next month in the UK with a starting price for manual model at GBP20,899(Rs. 20.09 lakh) and GBP22,249(Rs. 22.4 lakh) for automatic offering. The Vitara was spied testing recently in India and could probably be showcased at the upcoming 2016 Delhi Auto Expose in February. It’s expected to be powered by 1.6-litre diesel engine that does duty in the S-Cross and 1.6-litre Petrol motor currently offered in the UK.
