Suzuki faced a tough time with the Inazuma 250 due to its high price tag and it had to be pulled out the market due to the resultant lack of popularity among customers. Launched in January 2014, the twin-cylinder motorcycle entered India with a hefty price of well over Rs. 3 lakh and it did not turn out to be the ‘lightning that strikes during a thunderstorm’ as it name suggested.
However, things have changed over the last few years and entry-level premium motorcycles are enticing buyers more than they had ever been. Staying just above the 200 cc naked street segment dominated by Bajaj NS200 and TVS Apache RTR 200 4V, Yamaha introduced its FZ25 and Fazer 250 at highly affordable price range and has tasted decent success.
In a recent report, it has been said that a brand new 250 cc motorcycle from Suzuki will go on sale next year much to the excitement of enthusiasts. It is speculated to bear a new name but since the Gixxer brand has been for long and has a dedicated fan base, Suzuki could stick with ‘Gixxer 250’ moniker. It is expected to be the next logical step for owners wanting to upgrade from the 155 cc Gixxer with increased performance and handling characteristics.
In a similar fashion to Yamaha, Suzuki is more likely to launch two versions of the 250 cc motorcycle: a naked followed by a sporty faired. Power source will be a single-cylinder oil-cooled engine that must be good enough to produce around 25 horsepower. It could get a six-speed transmission for better touring capabilities and use a traditional telescopic front forks and monoshock rear suspension.
To conform with upcoming safety standards, it is expected to offer ABS as standard fitment. The Suzuki Gixxer 250 will square off against the FZ25 and it could boast an aggressive design language along with long touring comforts. Features like all-digital instrumentation, LED headlamp, turn signals and tail lamp, a high range fuel tank, sporty yet relaxed handle bar position, etc could be in the pipeline.
It could undercut the Yamaha FZ25 in pricing and when new safety mandate comes into effect by April 2019, the prices of existing models will go up as well. Thus, we predict a price bracket of around Rs. 1.4 lakh (ex-showroom) for the Gixxer 250 and its faired version, probably named GSX250, will be positioned below the Honda CBR250R at around Rs. 1.55 lakh (ex-showroom).
