SsangYong aims to enter the zero emission market with next generation Korando EV; will be sold worldwide

Mahindra-owned South Korean auto manufacturer, SsangYong, is developing the next generation Korando SUV as a zero emission all-electric car and it is scheduled to launch in 2019. With this all-electric SUV, the brand aims to enter a new market segment that has huge potential considering the need for environment friendly alternative powertrain technology in future.

The next generation Korando EV that is internally codenamed as C300, will be sold across the world. This car is expected to be manufactured at the brand’s Pyongtaek factory that has not been running at its full capacity. This SUV is likely to come drawing design inspiration from the XAV and XAVL concepts that were showcased at 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show and at 2017 Geneva Motor Show respectively.

Another source of insp0iration for the design of this SUV could be the SIV-2 concept. It is not sure, if the Korean auto major will rely solely on electric powertrain for the next generation Korando or not. We can expect a pure electric variant to be available alongside the conventional fuel powered model. However, further details are yet to be disclosed by the company.

Interesting fact is that SsangYong’s parent company Mahindra too is working on electric powered cars and the next model is due for 2018 launch. As we reported earlier, Mahindra aims to launch two electric models in India in next two years and the first one is going to be the KUV100 EV that will arrive in late 2018. We can assume that both the companies will share EV technologies in their cars.

Speaking about Mahindra and SsangYong’s joint works, the former band is testing its upcoming SUV XUV300 that is based on the same platform as the latter’s Tivoli, which has earned pretty good success. Apart from that, Mahindra is also working on another larger car that is based on SsangYong Rexton.
