Speed Governors Become Mandatory for Cabs in Delhi

The decision to limit maximum speed for cabs has been taken to reduce road accidents in Delhi and NCR

Transport department of Delhi government has made the speed governors mandatory for taxis and cabs in Delhi and NCR. The move has been taken in order to reduce the number of road accidents in the region. According to the new rule, maximum speed limit for the taxis and cabs in Delhi will be limited to 80 kmph. However, the taxi unions have opposed the decision and threatened to launch a strike.

Delhi Traffic Police’s data says that 1,671 and 1,622 people were killed in 2014 and 2015 respectively. Also, more than 16,000 people were injured in these two years due to road accidents and a major number of accidents involved the taxis and cabs. With this decision all the taxis and cabs including app based cabs like Ola and Uber also have to install speed governors.

The decision has been taken by city transport department following the union transport ministry’s recent notification. The taxi unions say that taxi drivers cannot afford to install speed governors as it will be expensive for them. A speed governor installation costs around Rs. 10,000 and the units want the centre to withdraw the rule.

India is a country with a very high number of death, due to road accidents. To curb the number of road accidents, the road and transport ministry has been taking several decisions for last couple of years in order to make the roads safer for both the cars and commuters as well.

While the decision of installation of speed governors is the latest rule, Last year in August, road and transport ministry of India ordered state governments, PWDs, NHAI and BRO to remove speed breakers from national highways. The ministry believed that these speed breakers pose potential threat to the lives of people travelling through the highways.
