The design of 2020 Mahindra Thar will be different and modern to be in line with new generation products
Mahindra Thar is one of the most popular off-road vehicles in the country. The Thar was officially introduced in 2010 and later the company given a mid-life facelift in 2015. The design of Thar is one of its USP compared to other off-road vehicles as it follows the footsteps of iconic Mahindra Jeep models.
The Thar has huge fan following across the country as it is positioned as a lifestyle product also. The current generation Thar is nearing the end of its life cycle and the Indian manufacturer has begun development of next generation model.
Mahindra is developing an all new platform and Thar will be the first product to be underpinned by new platform. This new platform will be used to develop other SUVs also. The design of next generation model will be different and modern to be in line with new generation products. SsangYong and Pininfarina will also play a crucial role in the design of new Thar along with Mahindra’s own designers.
We can expect interior of second generation Thar to be better than current model with the quality of materials to go up along with some new features like touch screen infotainment system, climate control, new instrument cluster and more. The second generation Thar will also meet new crash test norms which will come to effect from October 1, 2019 as it is one of the major reasons for adopting new platform.
The engine lineup of Thar will be also revised as the new engine will meet Bharat VI emission norms. Current generation Thar is powered by 2.5 L diesel engine producing 105 PS of power at 3,800 rpm and 247 Nm of torque between 1,800 – 2,000 rpm. This engine is mated to 5 speed manual gearbox. Mahindra will also make changes for suspension to improve ride quality and highway stability also.
The Thar is a proper off-roader with old school type four wheel drive system with low range gearbox instead of modern electronic four wheel drive system. The current generation model gets auto engaging differential lock at rear axles for improved off-roading and we can expect Mahindra to improve off-road capabilities of Thar. The Indian manufacturer is expected to launch next generation Thar in 2020.
