Royal Enfield sales dropped by whopping 17 per cent in April 2019 but exports have increased thanks to 650 Twins

Royal Enfield sold 62,879 units in April 2019 compared to 76,187 units in the same month last year, which is a decline of 17 per cent. The products below 350 cc reported huge loss while models above 350 cc registered good growth thanks to the new Interceptor 650 and Continental GT 650.

The sales of motorcycles below 350 cc stood at 55,522 units, which is much lower than the previous month but the sales of models above 350 cc were at 7,357 units. Royal Enfield is manufacturing the new Interceptor 650 and Continental GT 650 in India and exporting to the global markets.

The company has managed to export 3,742 units last month compared to 1,560 units in the same month last year. Recently, the company introduced dual-channel ABS variant on all models as the government has made it mandatory that all two-wheelers above 125 cc must come with ABS as standard and CBS for models below 125 cc.

Royal Enfield has already commenced works on the BSVI variant of its popular models like the Classic 350 and 500. The updated engine might offer better refinement than current units along with slight improvement in performance and efficiency. The launch of BSVI models is expected to take place early next year.

Along with engine updates, the company will make some aesthetical changes to make the models more appealing. Royal Enfield is also working on expanding accessories for the 650 Twins as personalisation is key for the touring motorcycles. Among the two models, Interceptor 650 is popular among customers compared to Continental GT 650.

Both cruiser bikes are powered by same 648 cc single cylinder engine with fuel injection and produce 47 bhp of power at 7,250 rpm and 52 Nm of torque at 5,250 rpm. This engine is mated to a 6-speed gearbox. The 650 Twins are the first models from the company to come with the slipper clutch and brake duties are handled by disc brakes at both ends with dual-channel ABS.
