The electric version of the Classic 500 was displayed at the brand’s dealership in Thailand; hints at Royal Enfield preparing for zero-emission future
Pictures of the first-ever electric version of a Royal Enfield motorcycle surfaced on the internet a few days ago. It is based on the Indian brand’s best-selling Classic series and was snapped at its dealership in Thailand. It is no secret that Royal Enfield wants to expand its presence beyond India and the upcoming 650 cc Interceptor and Continental GT would play a big role in aiding that cause. However, an electric retro motorcycle would also be too good resist in both foreign as well as domestic markets.
Royal Enfield has earlier admitted that it is working on electric versions of its existing models and the pictures posted here are a clear indication of it. The electrified variant is clearly based on the stock Classic 500 as the 350 could have been deemed small and comes painted in traditional Classic Black colour scheme. There are obvious mechanical changes made to accommodate the electric drivetrain.

It includes modification to the frame for stuffing in the large battery pack and for additional protection it has metal casing on the sides. The traditional chain drive has been replaced by a belt drive while the sub-frame packs a luggage rack compromising the seat for the pillion.
The aftermarket suspension unit can also be noted as well with gas charged shocks. The regular 153 mm rear drum brake has been replaced by a disc setup while the classic instrument cluster is opted out for a digital system that may presumably show the range per single charge alongside other necessary information.

Details of the all-important electric powertrain remain under the wraps currently and we hope to know more about it soon. The stock Classic 500 is powered by a 499 cc single-cylinder engine which is fuel injected to produce a maximum power output of 27.2 bhp and 41.3 Nm of peak torque.
