Brazilian-spec Renault Kwid gets adequate frontal protection and marginal side protection; comes with improved safety compared to last year’s model

Renault Kwid meant for Brazilian market has achieved three star safety rating in Latin NCAP crash test program. The popular hatchback has clearly improved its safety level compared to the India-made model tested in September last year by Global NCAP, which scored one star rating. Initially in May 2016, Renault Kwid was criticized heavily as it received zero star safety rating.

Speaking about the safety of the made-in-Brazil Kwid, it comes with adequate frontal protection and marginal side impact protection as well. However, the chest protection for adult occupants is not good and it resulted in three stars out of five. On the child safety front too, the Kwid comes with adequate protection.

The Brazilian-spec model gets stronger structure that enhances protection in case of a side impact. Side thorax airbags add more protection to the car reducing damage in case of a mishap. On the child safety front, it gets Isofix child seat mounts and top tether anchorage. However there is no airbag disconnection switch for the front passenger or any three-point seatbelt as well.

It is clear that the Brazilian-spec Renault Kwid is better equipped compared to the India-spec hatchback. The India-spec Kwid doesn’t get front passenger airbag or side airbag. Also, Isofix child seat mounts are unavailable as well. However, we expect the French auto major to add such protective feature to the highly popular car in near future.
