2020 Mahindra Thar is expected to make global premiere at the Auto Expo early next year before going on sale

Mahindra & Mahindra is expected to introduce the next generation Thar in the domestic market early next year. Likely to make global debut at the 2020 Auto Expo in February, the upcoming Thar could accompany the new avatar of the Scorpio as well on the show floor. We brought you images of the 2020 Thar’s test mules before and they certainly evolved in recent times.

The couple of pictures posted here were snapped when the second generation Mahindra Thar was doing altitude testing. Firstly, it is easy to note that the forthcoming Thar is grown bigger than the outgoing model. It will help in increased occupant and boot space while enabling a larger footprint for the SUV.

The Thar has created a cult following ever since it went on sale in October 2010 and Mahindra has prepared the new off-roader to be more eye-pleasing to the discerning customers. It has certainly taken an evolutionary approach to the styling philosophy and instead of going too dramatic, Mahindra has stuck by its traditional design cues.

The 2020 Mahindra Thar gets more prominent horizontal front grille slats while the front bumper and flared wheel arches elevate the butch appeal of the off-roader. The upright front fascia also adorns slightly rakish windshield, flat bonnet, circular headlamps and more. The rear end also gets subtle updates with bigger tail lamps.

It will likely be underpinned by a brand new architecture that will also be used in the Scorpio to meet pedestrian crash test standards. Chances of the 2020 Mahindra Thar offered in hard- and soft-top variants are really high going by the test mules and the third-row seating arrangement could be forward facing.

The DI variant was discontinued recently due to upcoming stricter emission norms and there will be a new diesel motor in place with more power and torque outputs. The powertrain will be upgraded to meet BSVI standards as well. The interior will come with a revised dashboard, new instrument cluster with digital MID screen, new steering wheel and a possible touchscreen infotainment system in the high-spec models.
