Piaggio will use their new sub-200cc air-cooled fuel injected BSVI complaint engine to power their Aprilia and Vespa branded scooters

We have already reported earlier that Piaggio is developing a new and powerful engine for the Aprilia scooter. Piaggio Vehicles’ managing director and CEO, Diego Graffi, recently said in an interview that the company will introduce a sub-200cc motor for the Aprilia scooter in India. Now a new report claims that the sub-200cc engine may also power a new Vespa scooter as well.

Diego Graffi said, “It is going to be a big jump from what we currently see in the Indian market and will also preview what could come in the market afterwards. We are developing the scooter right now and it is going to be a fully customized Indian development. Whatever we develop in India in collaboration with the R&D centre located in Italy, is specifically meant for the Indian market.

Although not much is known about the engine at this moment except the fact that the new motor will be in between the 150-200 cc displacement. Even if the new engine is not exactly a 200cc unit but still expect it to carry a displacement of around 180cc. The new engine will be an air-cooled (to keep the overall cost down), BS VI compliant unit. It will also feature fuel injection technology as well.

The engine will continue to use Piaggio’s three-valve setup, which is also used in all their two-wheeler engines as well. Expect the new scooter to arrive towards the second half of 2020 or early 2021. The launch of the more powerful Vespa will then be followed by the sub-200cc Aprilia scooter as well.

Although nothing has been confirmed at this moment, there is a fair chance that the upcoming scooter might be displayed at the 2020 Auto Expo. Besides introducing the new sub-200cc scooter Apirila is currently also working on updating their current product portfolio to meet the upcoming stricter BS VI emission norms. Aprilia also has plans to introduce a powerful motorcycle as well to compete with the KTM Duke 200 and the RC 200 in India soon.
