Peugeot to bring two hatchbacks and two SUVs initially; assembly and production to take place in Chennai

French auto giant Peugeot is gearing up to re-enter Indian market in partnership with the CK Birla Group. The company’s upcoming lineup for the domestic market has been revealed. It includes two hatchback and two SUVs. The 208 and 308 hatchbacks will be initially brought here, while the SUV models will include the 2008 and 3008.

The French auto manufacturer owned by Groupe PSA will assemble and produce its cars in Chennai, where its Indian partner CK Birla Group has a strong base. Peugeot is emphasising on the Hindustan Motors’ production facility in Chennai. Initially, the company is expected to bring CKD units in India and at later stage it will import the CBU models.

Interestingly, Peugeot has been testing its cars in India since 2012 that marks the automaker’s long range plan for the country market. Under its joint venture with CK Birla Group, Peugeot will invest two-third of the total Rs. 700 crore earmarked for the project. Apart from the focusing on the cars, the company is aiming to setup a widespread dealership network as well.

Now speaking about the cars, the 208 and 308 hatchbacks will come as premium hatchbacks. The Peugeot 208 is expected to be built locally that will help the brand to keep its pricing competitive. It would get an 82 PS generating 1.2-litre petrol engine under the hood. The 308 hatchback will get a petrol engine in various power outputs.

The Peugeot 3008 SUV will carry a 131 PS producing 1.2-litre petrol engine under the hood. It will also get a 1.6-litre diesel engine capable of generating power output between 99 PS and 120 PS. The 3008 SUV is younger than the 2008 and it won the 2017 Car of the Year Award at the Geneva Motor Show. The 2008 will get the same engines as its sibling 3008. Expect all the cars to come with both manual and automatic transmission options and there will be plenty of upmarket features in these cars in order to make them appealing.
