The EcoSport, Aspire and Figo had more takers for diesel variants than petrol in FY19; Ford will upgrade its oil-burners to meet BSVI norms wherever the demand is there

India is a tough market to crack for most of the car manufacturers and as history has shown, it has been particularly difficult for the American car brands. The lone surviving American brand in India is the Ford Motor Company, that has some really nice products like Ford Endeavour and Ecosport in its portfolio, but is struggling to rake up good sales numbers in the domestic market. Here’s its FY19 analysis comparing petrol vs diesel model sales-

1. Ford Ecosport

India’s first proper compact SUV that started the trend back in 2013 is also the most sold Ford Ecosport in FY19. Ford managed to sell a total of 46,265 units of the SUV, out of which the petrol powered model had fewer takers with 35% share and diesel buyers at 65%. To put in numbers, 16029 units of Ecosport with petrol engine were sold while 30,236 units of the diesel engine powered Ecosport were sold.

Model Petrol Sales No. Diesel Sales No.
Ford EcoSport 16,029 30,236
Ford Freestyle 12,524 10,351
Ford Aspire 7,478 7,962
Ford Figo 1,168 1,256

2. Ford Freestyle

The next product on our list is also the second highest selling car for Ford India – the Freestyle hatchback, or CUV (that’s how Ford market the Freestyle as). Ford managed to sell 22,875 units of Freestyle, more than the Figo hatchback itself, out of which 55% were petrol and 45% were diesel cars. In all, Ford sold 12,524 petrol Freestyle and 10,351 diesel Freestyle in FY19.

4. Ford Figo

Last on our list is the Ford Figo, company’s most affordable offering, which failed to get as many buyers in FY19 as the rest of the cars. In fact, the Figo is the worst sold car for Ford in FY19 with only 2,424 buyers preferring the hatchback throughout the year. Out of these, 1,168 were petrol Figo and 1,256 were diesel Figo, the same mix as Aspire – 48% vs 52%.
