The government has finally announced that driving a taxi or three wheelers doesn’t require commercial driving license and people can use their personal licence to drive these vehicles. Currently, it will take one year to get the commercial driving license after obtaining personal licence.
In July 2017, Supreme Court ordered that personal driving license is enough to drive taxis and three wheelers, but commercial license is continued to be required for driving bus and trucks. The new move will certainly increase more job opportunities for the youth.
Usually the people need to pay Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 30,000 for driving agents to get commercial license quickly. With this latest move government can stop the corruption in this business and make it transparent. The road ministry has also asked state government to scrap badge system, but some experts suggest that this will increase congestion on our roads as more young people will join online taxi and two wheelers which is going to increase the number of vehicles in our road.
Anil Chikkara an expert on transport issues said that in an ideal condition one taxi can replace at least 6 personal vehicles and three wheelers can replace dozens of private vehicles. This will certainly encourage people to use public transport efficiently and effectively.
But we need to step up driving licence test also as the current system is very simple and mostly everyone will get a licence very easily which could lead to more accidents and government should take care of this also. We encourage government to update our law system with current world as most of our laws are outdated and not effective.
They haven’t been updated since the beginning when the law was created and it’s not a simple task also. Finally we can see some positives as the government is trying to make our road safer with mandatory ABS and CBS on bikes and new safety norms coming for cars like crash tests.
