Nitin Gadkari visits Tesla Motors; the EV manufacturer shows interest in entering Indian market
Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Road Transport, Highways and Shipping went to convene with Tesla’s key personnel in the US to discuss about a possible JV in a hope to bring viable electric car manufacturing into India. It is essentially a synergy between Tesla and Indian automobile manufacturers in a bid to slap down the heightening pollution levels in the nation.
The Union Minister expressed that the Indian government is keen in exploring ways to bubble up electric vehicles across the length and breadth of the country. One such attractive measure is availing incentives for alternative fuel equipped vehicles. As India being a top-notch automobile manufacturing hub in the world, Nitin Gadkari proposed to Tesla about having it as the heart of Asia’s production.
To establish manufacturing facilities, lands near major ports were offered for the ease of exporting India-made Tesla models to other Asian markets. The popular American brand’s executives were impressed by India’s lucrative proposition and said the proposal will be considered for future expansion as the recently unveiled low-cost Model 3 is a global car and asks for manufacturing outside US to meet demands.
The proposal put forward by Nitin Gadkari also focussed on electrifying commercial, two-wheelers and public motor vehicles as well. For that, Tesla said it has plans in the pipeline for pickups and trucks in particular.
The company refused to disclose the number of bookings received for the four-door compact Model 3 all-electric sedan from India, although many registered to buy this model coming out in the next fiscal.
Tesla was asked to give a framework on its domestic market entry and the officials enquired about the government incentives being provided for electric vehicles and the current growth for such market.
