The New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP) for Latin America recently tested March (Micra in India) and awarded just one star rating

Nissan globally launched new generation of Micra but it is available only in developed markets and the previous generation model is currently on sales in many countries including India, Brazil, Mexico and more. The New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP) for Latin America recently tested March (Micra in India) and awarded just one star rating.

The Latin NCAP test includes two crash tests – frontal impact and side impact. During frontal impact, March offered good protection for head and neck of driver and passengers but chest protection is weak. The March didn’t offer much protection for driver and passenger knees as the impact of hitting dangerous structures is really high.

But the body structure of March is unstable and feet protection is adequate only. During side impact, the March offered good protection for head and pelvis but marginal protection for the chest. Nissan only offered dual airbags as standard as the hatchback misses out on ESC and other safety features.

Nissan March doesn’t come with ISOFIX points and Child Restraint Systems (CRS) were installed using adult seatbelt and the hatchback received two stars for Child Occupant Protection. The March was already tested in 2016 and adult protection has been downgraded from four to three stars and Latin NCAP has asked Nissan to improve body quality.

The March is manufactured in Mexico and Brazil for Latin American market. Latin NCAP also tested Mazda 2, which is manufactured in Mexico scoring two stars.  Alenjandro Furas, Secretary of General of Latin NCAP said that it is encouraging that more compact model comes with good child and adult occupant protection.

He added that it is still a concern the low levels of protection offered by top sellers like Nissan March. In India, Nissan offers dual airbags with Micra and driver side airbag as standard on Active model. Nissan Micra is powered by both diesel and petrol engines coupled with manual and CVT automatic transmission.
