NHTSA investigates 2016 Hyundai Sonata as it has been reported to be facing rear brake locking problems without applying brake pedal

2016 Hyundai Sonata has been reported to having a brake issue. The car’s rear brake has been reported locking even without the brake pedal being applied. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in US has started investing the issue after receiving four complaints. One of the complaints even comes as the car had a fire in the right side rear wheel area.

Though no injury or deaths have been reported, but the NHTSA has started a preliminary investigation on the issue. Reports suggest, around 4,000 units of 2016 Hyundai Sonata are involved in the investigation. The South Korean auto manufacturer instructed the dealers to update the Sonata’s parking brake control software, which is causing the braking problem. The company itself is still tight lipped about the issue though.

The Hyundai Sonata is a stylish and upmarket looking sedan, which received an update last year. The car features a very elegant design with sharp headlamp clusters with projector units, LED daytime running lights, chrome garnished horizontally slated radiator grille. The front bumper comes with wide air intake, which is slatted horizontally. The air intake is flanked by horizontal LED stripes and chrome trim at both sides.

The interior looks very stylish with a sporty black theme, multifunction steering wheel, analog digital combo instrument cluster, and an 8 inch touchscreen infotainment system at the centre console. The upholstery and seats come wrapped with upmarket material, while it gets front and rear arm rests.

Power comes from a 2.4 litre Theta II GDI engine which kicks out 185 hp of peak power and 241 Nm of peak torque. Other engines include a 1.6 litre turbocharged Gamma engine generating 178 hp of peak power and a 2.0 litre Theta II turbocharged GDI engine producing 245 hp of peak power. Transmission options include a 7-speed dual clutch gearbox and a 6-speed Shiftronic automatic gearbox.
